From Our President...

Hello from PCPI!

We hope you’ve had a wonderful and refreshing summer and that your staff members and families have returned to school motivated to make this year in co-op a great one.

October is National Co-op Month, a purposeful time to reflect on the benefits we all gain by coming together in collaboration. This past spring at the PCPI Annual Meeting, we did a lot of reflecting about what this has meant for us personally as caregivers, teachers, and school administrators, and the theme that continually rose to the surface was "Co-op is Community!" Whether that's through a network of educational colleagues, wonderful supports grown as caregivers co-op alongside one another, or friendships developed in the preschool years and carrying on even into adulthood. You may have noticed this theme of "Co-op is Community!" highlighted in a few videos on our social media accounts--check them out if you missed it!

The mission of PCPI remains unchanged: to promote and support family involvement, learning through play, family education, and building community connections. We love to see these values lived out from day to day at your school. We are always looking for ways to make it easier for you who do the direct work of facilitating your program. This year, we’re particularly excited to announce the rollout of an all-new, online Co-op Board Service Training available as a part of your PCPI membership or at a cost to non-members. This training will include the same helpful content from past Board Training Sessions, but it can be completed at your own pace and will be available for reference when you need to revisit a certain section. See below to learn a little more. We are SO pleased with the result of much hard work, and we think you’ll find this to be a really helpful resource.

In an ever-changing educational landscape, thank you for remaining a part of the work PCPI is doing on a larger scale! I hope your school year is off to a wonderful start as you continue your commitment to high quality early childhood education. A sincere thank you for the work you do!

Cooperatively yours,

Melissa Ranck

PCPI President

And the Winner is...

Last month's survey revealed that summer readers strongly preferred a good, old-fashioned print book for their poolside (or bedtime) reading.

On to the question of the month...

For some schools, sending staff to attend the NAEYC Annual Conference is an integral part of their overall professional development program. For others, they attend when the event is close to home.

This year, the conference is December 5-8 in Washington DC, and PCPI will be hosting a session specifically about cooperative resilience. We hope you'll join us! More details will be shared next month, but registration is open now.

Will you be attending the NAEYC Annual Conference in December?

21-Day Challenge Results

We are happy to share that your participation in the 21-Day-Challenge for CPR and First Aid training, sponsored by the Institute for Wild Med help us raise $921.50 which will help to fund our grant programs.

Grants Open Next Month

Did you know PCPI has grants for member schools? Yes, your school could receive a grant.

Grants will be awarded to schools who join PCPI or renew their membership for the 2027 membership year. Councils can also receive grants for council-wide projects.

These are competitive grants and we typically receive more applications than we can fund. The grants are:

  • Anne Eddowes Cooperative Spirit Grant: One or 2 grants of up to $1000 are available to applicants who design a project that involves parents working together to create a legacy for their school.

  • Becky Allen Parent Education Grant (US schools): Up to $500 available for parent education programs.

  • Katharine Whiteside Taylor Grant (Canadian schools): Up to $500 available for parent education programs.

  • Co-op Support Grant: Up to $850 to a school needing financial support or to start a new school.

Now is the time to start thinking about how your school might apply. More information is available on our website, and applications will open October 15. Deadline for applications is Dec. 15, 2026.

Good luck!

Grant Recipient Recap

Applications Open October 15th

The window for PCPI grant applications opens next month! Could your school community benefit from grant funding? To get your creative juices flowing, we are sharing a letter of thanks we received from one of our 2026 grant recipients, Spring-Mar Cooperative Preschool in Burke, VA.

Dear PCPI,

I wanted to take a moment to personally thank you and the PCPI team again for the support that made our Linda Cooper Music Wall possible. I’m thrilled to share that we completed the wall, and today we held a dedication in honor of Mrs. Cooper, who was with Spring-Mar for 35 years.

Although our Family Fun Day was rain-soaked, we were able to unveil the wall indoors and capture some photos, which I’ll attach. Mrs. Cooper was incredibly moved—she was brought to tears. Knowing her legacy will live on at Spring-Mar meant the world to her (her own children were Spring-Mar kids!), and we’re deeply grateful to you for making it possible.

The wall is already a community effort—families donated materials, and we’ve had volunteers step up to help maintain and even expand it in the future. Our property committee will take the lead on upkeep, and we’re excited to see how the wall evolves.

Thank you again for helping us create something that will introduce generations of children to music in Mrs. Cooper’s honor. We are so appreciative of PCPI’s support.

Warmly,

Kayla Wilkinson

Vice President 2025-2026

keyboard-finger.jpg

We are so excited to announce that we are putting the finishing touches on our Co-op Board Service Training online course. We anticipate sharing access information with members later this month.

The course was developed with input from seasoned educators and administrators with a deep working knowledge of cooperative schools. We hope that through this training we can help parents and staff grow their skills and knowledge so they can effectively serve on the Board of Directors for their school.

The chapters in the training include:

  • How Co-Ops Work
  • Roles and Responsibilities in a Co-Op
  • Tools to Guide Your Way
  • Board Responsibilities
  • Best Practices for Efficiency and Focus
  • Tips for Success

A certificate will be available to download when the course is completed.

The course will be available for free to members, and for a fee to non-members. Remember that a PCPI School Membership means that everyone associated with the school can enjoy the benefits!
