Port of Brownsville Celebrates 90 Years of Economic Leadership

Celebrating 90 years of progress in 2026, the Port of Brownsville has transformed a bold vision into an economic powerhouse, securing billions in private investment and anchoring one of the fastest-growing manufacturing and logistics hubs in Texas.

Established by voters in 1928 and officially opened in 1936, the port reshaped the southernmost tip of Texas from an agriculture-based economy into a global trade gateway. The construction of the Brownsville Ship Channel during the Great Depression connected the Rio Grande Valley to the Gulf of Mexico and laid the groundwork for decades of industrial expansion.

From its earliest days, the port evolved from handling agricultural products and earning the title "Number One Cotton Port in the Nation" to managing grains and shrimp, and ultimately becoming a diversified logistics hub supporting steel, energy, construction and the space industries as well as positioning itself as the premier hub for shipbuilding and ship recycling in the U.S.

As the only deepwater seaport located directly on the U.S–Mexico border, the port plays a critical role in international commerce, accounting for 5.3 percent of Texas’ total trade value moving through all 23 seaports of the Lone Star State, according to the Texas Comptroller’s office. Its geographic position provides direct access to global maritime routes while serving as a key gateway for cross-border trade between the United States and Mexico.

Port Abilities: Karmol LNGT Powership Europe Joins Göktay Bey at Karpower Valley

The Karmol LNGT Powership Europe arrived March 3, at the Port of Brownsville for lay berth, joining the power station vessel Karadeniz Powership Goktay Bey at Karpower Valley’s shipyard, formerly Seatrium AmFELS.

Sailing under the Liberian flag, the Karmol LNGT Powership Europe is a specialized LNG terminal ship designed to transport and store liquefied natural gas and convert it back into natural gas to support floating power plants like the Karadeniz Powership Goktay Bey, which can supply electricity to coastal power grids.

The vessels are part of the fleet operated by Karpowership, a global leader in power generation, LNG infrastructure, and shipbuilding that recently acquired the Seatrium AmFELS shipyard.

Brownsville Navigation District Vice Chairman Sergio Tito Lopez presented a sponsorship check to the Brownsville ISD Racing Team in February, supporting the students’ efforts as they prepare for upcoming GreenpowerUSA competitions.

BND Supports STEM Success for Brownsville ISD Racing Team

The Brownsville Navigation District is proud to sponsor the Brownsville Independent School District (BISD) Racing Team as part of its commitment to workforce development and STEM education.

Established in 2017, the BISD Racing Team competes in the GreenpowerUSA Electric Car Challenge, a nationwide program that challenges students from fourth grade through college to design, build and race electric vehicles. The initiative promotes careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics by providing hands-on opportunities to apply classroom learning to real-world engineering challenges.

For eight consecutive years, the team qualified for the National Finals but was unable to attend because of financial constraints. In May 2025, eight students traveled to Birmingham, Alabama, to compete at Nationals for the first time. The team was the only all-female team in the competition and earned a third-place finish in the nation.

The Port of Brownsville is proud to support programs that highlight the talent and determination of Brownsville students.
