Week 3 of SLYC Junior Sailing was one of those beautiful Stony Lake summer weeks — sunny skies, beautiful wind and many happy sailors!
The week started with our Race Team having a “Masters Monday” session with Team Canada Women’s America’s Cup athlete and former Olympian Mariah Millen. Mariah shared her experiences on growing up racing in Canada, her Olympic training and her Tokyo experience and her training for the first-ever women’s America’s Cup in Barcelona in October (and most importantly, tips on how to go fast in a Laser/420/Opti).
The SLYC Race Team then headed to Port Credit for the annual Steerers and Four Sisters regatta, where we had some great results...
Steerers Regatta (July 18-19)
Optimist
At the end of the full two-day regatta, SLYC took the top TWO podium positions in the Optimist Green Fleet, with Maggie Hertz taking the 1st place medal followed closely by Quinn Calder in 2nd. And, to top it all off, PCYC presented the Steerers’ Sportsperson Award of the regatta to both Maggie and Quinn!
420
The 420 fleet at Steerers’ Regatta had a significant 72 boats in the fleet. Top spot went to Gordie Walsworth and Nina Brooks-Hill, who cracked the Top 10 with an overall 8th place in the regatta (while landing a 1st place finish in the 5th race of the series!). Four SLYT boats finished in the Top 25 — an excellent achievement.
Laser
SLYC registered two Laser Radials in the Steerers and top spot went to Nicholas O’Dwyer with an impressive 4th place finish overall (with a best finish of 2nd place in the first race of the regatta and missing an overall podium spot by only 3 points).
Four Sisters Regatta (July 20-21)
420
SLYC was battling in another huge fleet of 73 420s at the Four Sisters Regatta. Top SLYC spot went to Pippa Barrett and Abby Wonnacott, who secured a 12th place overall finish (with Peter DiPasquale and Sy Walsworth close behind in 14th spot). Four Stony boats cracked the top 25 and coaches were pleased to see all racers stay focused in varying conditions on Lake Ontario.
Laser
In a competitive fleet of 34 Laser Radials, Nicholas O’Dwyer was the top SLYC boat with a 6th place overall finish. Nicholas remained focused all regatta and achieved his best result of a 3rd place finish in the final race.
Congratulation to all racers who continually improved their race skills while facing a variety of conditions!
The fun continues this week back on Juniper, with House Day and the Junior Banquet taking place on Thursday, July 25.
Happy sailing,
