The Vegetative Island - Treating Squam’s Water Through Floating Wetlands

Late in the summer of 2024, Squam Environmental Preservation Fund (SEPF) funded a floating vegetative island deployed by the Squam Lakes Association to pilot a plant/water nutrient absorbing project.

The Floating Islands project is back - keep an eye out for these floating mats of plants on Squam Lake! These floating wetlands use native plants to naturally remove nutrients from the lake. Anchored foam mats hold the plants in place while their roots dangle into the water, grabbing contaminants from both the water and sediment, accumulating in the stems and leaves. At the end of the season, the plants now containing toxins will be removed from the lake and composted away from the watershed. Water samples will be collected throughout the season to measure the effectiveness of treatment. Read more at squamlakes.org.

Just a reminder, this summer’s SEPF Spotlight Partner is the Squam Lakes Association’s Squam Watershed Campaign. Click here for more information on how to donate!

Introducing Tiffany

Meet longtime Squam Lake Biologist Tiffany J. Grade from the Loon Preservation Committee (LPC) in New Hampshire. She focuses on researching, monitoring, managing, and educating about loons and their habitats on Squam Lake. Her work includes studying the factors affecting loon populations and helping to restore a healthy loon population on the lake. Join Tiffany every Tuesday at 7:45pm at the Playhouse to hear more about the loons on Squam. Learn about these incredible birds, their current condition and nesting sights on the lake. You can find more information about LPC at loon.org.

Fourth of July at RDC: A Tradition Through the Years

Independence Day at RDC has always been a time for community, celebration, and a deep sense of tradition. In the early days, guests gathered in the dining room for a festive meal of salmon and peas. According to the 1948 Recreational Committee report, that year marked the first officially recorded Fourth of July celebration at RDC—a milestone in what has become one of our most cherished summer events.

Prior to World War II, the highlight of the day was a large fireworks display, funded by camper donations. Young men competed for the honor of setting them off from Needle Point or rafts anchored offshore. Occasionally, misadventures with torches led to all the fireworks igniting at once, sending canoeists into the water and onlookers scrambling!

Today, the Fourth has evolved into a full day of spirited fun and togetherness. Many guests kick off the morning with the RDC Triathlon, which includes a swim from the Main Dock, a canoe race around Algonquin Point, and a run from the Rockywold dock to Route 113 and back. In the afternoon, a colorful parade—led by enthusiastic grand marshals—winds its way to the ballfield, where old-fashioned games, a pie-eating contest, and a classic picnic bring everyone together.

At its heart, Independence Day at RDC continues to honor our strongest tradition: families gathering on the shores of Squam to make lifelong memories, year after year.
