The California State Council on Developmental Disabilities (SCDD) stands in solidarity with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), their families, the cross-disability community, and our allies.
Many of us feel under attack because of who we are. These attacks come in different ways and are happening fast. It feels like our rights, health, safety, and existence are under threat. If you feel this way too, please know you are not alone.
Right now, over 624,500 individuals with IDD and their families in California are at risk from proposed cuts to critical federal funding, including Medicaid and other vital programs. These cuts could seriously harm children, working families, people with disabilities, aging adults, and any person trying to live a healthy, independent life.
These cuts would directly threaten the rights of people with IDD to achieve self-determination, independence, and productivity in every aspect of community life.
At SCDD, these values are at the heart of everything we do. We know what is at stake. Cutting funding would mean fewer chances for people to:
- Get good jobs
- Live in safe and affordable homes
- Access food programs and medical care
- Get help to live on their own
- Receive essential equipment like wheelchairs or hearing aids
This is not just a civil rights issue. It is a fight for basic human rights.
We call upon all people with disabilities, their families, and allies to join us in this shared mission. We join many others who are actively engaged. Together, we can educate policymakers at the state and federal levels about why these services matter and why they must be protected and expanded.
Together, in solidarity,
The undersigned Councilmembers of the California State Council on Developmental Disabilities:
