Advocacy Committee News

RECAP: Lattes with Legislators

On April 29, the Advocacy Committee kicked off the Chamber Luncheon with our inaugural Lattes with Legislators event, and the turnout was energizing. Representative Adison Richards (26th District), Representative Tarra Simmons (23rd District), and Senator Deborah Krishnadasan (26th District) joined Chamber members for an informal morning conversation over coffee. The attendees discussed issues that hit close to home for Kitsap businesses and families, including the ferry system, public transportation, housing, and state spending. We're grateful to the legislators who took the time to show up and listen, and to the members who came ready to engage. Watch for more opportunities like this as we continue building direct connections between our community and the people representing us in Olympia.

RECAP: 23rd Legislative District Town Halls

On Saturday, April 18, the 23rd Legislative District held two town halls across Kitsap County, featuring Sen. Drew Hansen, Rep. Greg Nance, and Rep. Tarra Simmons. The GKC Advocacy Committee attended to hear directly from our legislators on issues shaping our region.

Housing & Property Taxes dominated the conversation. Legislators highlighted a historic investment in the state housing trust fund and noted that Washington needs approximately one million new homes by 2030. Last session’s rent stabilization bill caps annual rent increases at 7% plus inflation (up to 10%), aimed at protecting mobile home communities and renters facing extreme hikes. Legislators also acknowledged the tension between government intervention and private-sector solutions in driving down housing costs.

The Millionaire Tax drew significant interest, particularly its provisions for small businesses: those under the $600K B&O threshold would no longer pay that tax. While a court battle has begun, the measure may ultimately go before voters as an initiative.

Law Enforcement was raised as a pressing concern. Washington ranks among the lowest states in LE officers per capita, and while the legislature has limited jurisdiction over local agencies, efforts are underway to secure grant funding for hiring, although local matching requirements have been a barrier.

Other topics included transportation funding, senior services, a pediatric rehab clinic gap on the peninsula, and the formation of a Blue Ribbon Commission by Mayor Stern to address housing affordability through public-private collaboration.

Each legislator shared their top priorities for next session: Sen. Hansen focused on affordability, spending control, and federal policy impacts; Rep. Nance on ferry fixes, protecting the Puget Sound, and working families; and Rep. Simmons on affordability, healthcare, and vulnerable communities.

GKC Luncheon: 2026 Legislative Recap

The April Chamber Luncheon on April 29th featured a timely and substantive presentation from Morgan Irwin of the Association of Washington Business. Fresh off the close of the legislative session, Morgan gave members a thorough, business-focused recap of what happened in Olympia and what it means for employers here in Kitsap. He walked through the state's budget picture, the growing deficit, and a range of new employer regulations that businesses should have on their radar. It was the kind of detailed, practical breakdown that's hard to find elsewhere, and members left with a much clearer picture of the landscape ahead. We're grateful to Morgan and the AWB for making the trip out to share their expertise with our community.
