Award of Historical Marine Significance
Royal Commission for the Ocean Ranger Disaster
The loss of the Ocean Ranger and its crew was a marine catastrophe of momentous impact on the marine culture of Newfoundland and Labrador. After the loss, the Royal Commission was responsible for determining causes and creating the foundation for major improvements in offshore safety. Through their work at a time of grief and sadness, the industry has developed and implemented a safety culture that pervades all operations and activities, impacting safety throughout the world. Forty years later, it is important to recognize the RCORMD as a catalyst for offshore safety improvements to ensure this never happens again. The industry acknowledgement of the work of the Royal commission on the Ocean Ranger Disaster was reflected in a designation as a member of the Hall of Fame by the Offshore Energy Center in Houston, Texas.
