Reclaiming Our Voice: Centering the Black Voter This Black History Month
This Black History Month, the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus Foundation is centering the power, voices, and lived experiences of Black voters across our state. More than 600,000 Black voters are missing at the polls during Ohio elections. Their absence is not apathy, it is a signal that too many voices have gone unheard, unengaged, or pushed to the margins for far too long.
Black Ohioans know exactly what their families and communities need to thrive. That is why the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus Foundation developed the State of Black Ohio Pilot Brief, to ensure those voices are amplified, respected, and translated into action. Rooted in the lived experiences of residents in Cleveland’s Central neighborhood, the brief highlights what community members told us is working, what is broken, and what must change across education, employment, health, public safety, food access, and civic engagement.
This Black History Month, we are not only reflecting on our legacy, we are building our future. The State of Black Ohio Pilot Brief is more than a report; it is a call to action and a pathway to reengage Black voters by aligning policy with the real priorities of our communities.
We invite you to read and share the Pilot Brief, complete the statewide survey, and join us in turning community voice into collective power. Together, we can spark meaningful dialogue, inform policy solutions, reengage missing voters, and build a stronger Ohio where Black families don’t just survive, but thrive.
