From My Desk to Your In Box
May represents new beginnings and rejuvenation as the transition from spring to summer commences. The season is typically synonymous with flowers blossoming, pleasant weather, and families gathering in parks for picnics. It is also the time of year when walkers and bike riders increase on our streets, many of whom are children. Please be mindful as you dive around the city, especially at crosswalks, to ensure that children and adults can cross streets safely.
There are several key events this month, starting with the annual Shredding and Recycling Day this Saturday, May 4th, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the City Park parking lot off of Chelmsford. Please take a look at the details of the event and what will be accepted. Beautification Day follows on Saturday, May 11th. The event is open to families, church groups, local businesses, and students who need service hours. It is a great way to give back to our community. Euclid Creek Watershed is sponsoring the day and will give away 50 one-gallon trees for those who register. You can register for the event by contacting the Parks & Recreation Department at 440-442-2627. Lastly, the annual Memorial Day Service is on Monday, May 27th, at 10:00 a.m. Our keynote speaker will be Fr. Joseph Brankatelli, 20th Engineer Brigade Combat Airborne Corporal. I hope to see you as we honor those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom.
Perhaps the most special day in May is Mother's Day, celebrated on the 12th of this year. It is the day we show appreciation to all the moms, grandmas, and women we hold dear. We appreciate their love, care, and endless support with the hope that the day is just as special as they are to us.
Very truly yours,

Reminder: No Spring Leaf Collection
Just a reminder that the Service Department does not collect leaves and branches in the spring. The service is provided in the fall only. Please place leaves and debris in trash bags and set the bags on the tree lawn on your regular trash pick-up day.
Chipper Truck Brush Collection Program Has Resumed
Please cut any branch limbs into four-foot pieces and neatly place them on your tree lawn. The chipper truck runs daily (weather permitting) and follows the trash collection route. If you require a more significant pick-up, contact the Service Department at 440+-442-2629 to schedule an appointment.

Citizens Academy
The Mayfield Heights Police Department's 2024 Citizens Police Academy is currently in full swing, with a class of 20 enthusiastic students who have been actively participating in the class since it began in early April. The MHPD is delighted to provide this opportunity for citizens to learn about the department and build relationships with our officers. By fostering a strong Police-Citizen partnership through initiatives like the CPA, Mayfield Heights is paving the way for a safer and more connected community.
No Parking on SOM Center Road
The MHPD continues to receive complaints regarding vehicles parking on SOM Center Road while waiting for Our Savior Lutheran Church's Food Bank to open. This has been an ongoing issue for years and a hazard for travelers in the area. Please note that for future infractions, the violators will be ticketed under Mayfield Codified Ordinance 151.03(n).

May is Older American Month
Every May, the Administration for Community Living leads the nation’s observance of Older Americans Month (OAM). The 2024 theme is Powered by Connection, which recognizes the profound impact that meaningful relationships and social connections have on our health and well-being. Connectedness supports independence and aging in place by combatting isolation, loneliness, and other issues.
Join us in promoting the benefits of connecting with others. Here are some ways you can participate:
- Learn about the mental, physical, and emotional health benefits of social connection and how it contributes to overall well-being.
- Connect older adults you know with Community Partnership on Aging which provides resources, such as transportation, programs, meals, and social work assistance, that can help them overcome obstacles to achieving or maintaining meaningful relationships.
- Challenge professional and personal networks to prioritize meaningful social connections and share the benefits.
For more information about CPA, check out www.communitypartnershiponaging.org or call 216-291-3902. The National Council on Aging (www.ncoa.org) and the Administration for Community Living (https:/acl.gov) are good resources for information about health and social connections.
