August In the Gallery...πŸ–ΌπŸŽ¨πŸ‘©β€πŸŽ¨
Frame of Mind Presents
"Practice What You Teach"
By Marvin Pauls
Join us the whole month of August to view local artist
Marvin Pauls' art collection.

Opening Reception on Friday, August 11th 5:30-8pm

Marvin Pauls taught art at Hellgate High School for 29 years, figuring out fairly quick that to have successful student outcomes,
he had to continually practice his creative art making skills. He needed to make samples using the same media that the students would be using and provide clear written instructions that explained
the idea formulation underlying each project. Marvin also
demonstrated the various ideas and media regularly along the way
to help students learn new creative processes. A lot of his teacher
prep time (mostly the evenings and weekends) was spent making
samples and practicing new techniques. Much of this work began in
Marvin’s own sketchbooks and then he completed them with the same
substrate and media the students would also be using.

Over the years, as Marvin kept modifying and improving the projects,
he continued to make samples for classes and explored working out the ideas by making his own pieces of art; practicing many of the same
concepts he taught and developed by exploring them for his own
artistic growth. These concepts include: rule of thirds, mixing media,
social commentary, trace and erase, negative space, playful
discovery, found object and various drawing techniques.

This art show displays a range of some of the successful pieces he has produced throughout his teaching career. Some of the pieces are project samples, some started out as live demos during class which he developed later, and many are things Marvin did for himself while playing and practicing what he was teaching. The results are years of a documented teaching process showing the
production of beautiful images.

Paint it Black
By Patrick Dryz
Black is quite possibly the oldest pigment ever used, going all the way back to prehistoric times. In those days it mostly came from readily available materials such as soot, charred wood, and charred animal bones. Those materials were apparently so effective that they endured well into modern times. Black is a genuine product of nature. Opinions on black are divided: some love the contrast it creates, some don't use it at all, preferring to mix their darker tones from complimentary colors. To each their own. Blacks vary much in their opacity, temperature, and tinting strength. Choosing the right one might mean a wee bit of experimentation, but that's the fun of it, right? A word of caution: a little bit of black goes a very long way.

As blacks in the tube go, the Fab Four are Lamp Black, Bone/Ivory Black, Carbon Black, and Mars Black. Lamp Black (formally made with the soot from oil lamps) tends to be semi-opaque and on the cooler side. Ivory black was named because once upon a time it came from charred ivory. It is now made from the bones of non-endangered animals and leans to the warm, transparent side. Carbon black is quite opaque and neutral to cool temperature. Once made from charcoal, nowadays it comes from burning coal or gas. Mars black is a form of synthetic iron oxide. It tends to be warm in temperature, very strong and very opaque. All of the above are available in both oil and acrylic across brands like Golden, Gamblin, and M. Graham & Co.

There are of course options that are not purely black pigment. Gamblin's Chromatic Black, which is quite lovely, is made by combining Phatalo Emerald and Quinacridone Red. Payne's Gray and Van Dyke Brown contain black pigments mixed with Ultramarine Blue and India Red, respectively. That being said, try mixing a bit of pure black with your colors and see what happens! Use it to mute colors down a shade, or mix a cool black with a cool yellow for an acid green that pops. How a color appears, of course, depends on the other colors around it. Don't get carried away... too much black can certainly be monotonous and flatten your composition, but it can generally enhance your work if you know how to use it.

What's in your palette?
Not only can you come through our gallery the whole month of August and view the large collection of works by local artist, Marvin Pauls, you can also take a printmaking class with the one and only Marvin Pauls.

In this class (workshop) you will create a most unusual self-portrait, and turn it into a relief print using recycled materials and experiment with the printed image to add expressive variety.
What could be better than that?!
In the first class we will draw an extension of our faces on paper, turn the lines into shapes, then turn the shapes into a relief plate for printmaking using recycled materials.
The next two classes will be devoted to printing your self-portrait in various ways. First is working to get a clean print. Then some guided mixed media exploration including mixing ink colors, unusual papers and collage. Also you will learn about accurately labeling and signing prints.
