National Library Week - April 23-29, 2023
April 23-29 is National Library Week!
Join us in thanking Liz Hernandez for all of her hard work at South's Library Media Center this school year. Ms. Hernandez joined HSHS this year in the LMC and brought with her a dynamic energy, revitalized the book collection, and transformed the space into a center for academic achievement.
Our books now reflect our diverse student population, and our programming is providing outreach to numerous young learners.
Thank you, Ms. Hernandez. Your hard work is noticed and appreciated!

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. All types of libraries -- school, public, academic and special -- participate. For previous honorary chairpersons and event themes, see National Library Week History.
PE Department
Physical Education
Our students are enjoying finally getting outdoors and in the new pool for some 'summer like' activities. Coming in May our teachers will be conducting our mandated fitness testing in the areas of cardiovascular fitness, strength, endurance and flexibility. Our Freshmen PE will complete their final Life Skills/SEL lesson which addresses identifying healthy and unhealthy relationships.

Health Education
Our Health Education curriculum team has done an exceptional job of bringing in community/county speakers to address healthy decision-making, lifestyles and relationships. Hinsdale South has hosted Teen Parent Connection, YWCA, Teen Decision and Family and Shelter Services. Our team continues to provide supportive resources for our students to ensure the health and well-being of all our students.

Driver Education
Our curriculum team continues to stress the importance of safety while driving by utilizing community/county support on distracted driving, Metra rail safety and local police departments.
You most likely see our driver education students out driving around in the community to complete their mandated 6 hours of behind the wheel drive.

Civics Class Presentation - Darien City Council:
On April 3, NaKyra Culver and Umer Hasan from our Civics class presented at the City of Darien city council meeting asking for electrical crosswalks on Clarendon Hills Road from the parking lot to school to improve safety for students, staff and community members. With overwhelming support from the Darien city council, they will next meet with the municipal council to determine next steps. We are proud of our civics classes for their hard work in this endeavor and for their advocacy.
