Why It Matters
(Why is this relevant to us?)
As a Christ follower, do you ever find yourself disappointed that things do not seem to be working out as you expect them to? Ever wonder where the victories, blessings and righteousness Jesus promises are to be found? Ever wonder where your King really is and what He’s up to? The disciples were soon to experience similar disappointment, discouragement and unmet expectations. They would be called to live amongst their enemies rather than reign in triumph over them as they had expected. Jesus uses this parable to clarify expectations about the “when” of the Kingdom and give assignments for the “while you wait” time we still live in today.
The parable should encourage us that the King will return and remind us that we have important work to do for His Kingdom. We are given the opportunity to fulfil the responsibilities entrusted to us by God with the abilities and resources He provides. Jesus is coming again to evaluate, reward and bring judgement. In the meantime, Jesus expects us to be good stewards. He asks us to be faithful in the small things, indeed in all things. God is inviting us to help increase the Kingdom and show the world around us who the rightful King is. This is no small task, and there will be risks and costs (relationally, economically, physically, emotionally and more) to serving Christ in the time we live in.
We will be helped in the waiting and faithfully fulfilling God’s purposes by rightly understanding our God and growing in our love for Him and awareness of His presence in our lives. It is not the size of the assignment, or even the apparent outcome of our efforts, but rather the heart and trustworthiness of our service that our Lord desires. Let’s work to hear the Lord proclaim, “Well done, good servant!”
