Before Beaver Lake,

there was Camp Machanaim, con't...

Picture courtesy of Yael & Jon Cohen

Following last week's article, Jon Cohen sent this editor pictures of Camp Machanaim. In the picture above, the circled face is Yael Cohen's cousin, Ed Wolf.

These weren’t people from some distant, unconnected past. Some became people we knew. Others, like Ed, have relatives who are part of the Beaver Lake community today.

The property changed. The buildings changed. Camp Machanaim eventually became Beaver Lake. But something remarkably familiar remained, a place where Jewish families could come together, where children could grow up together, and where friendships and memories could last a lifetime.

Nearly seventy years after that 1961 photograph was taken, another generation of children runs around Beaver Lake. They swim, play, make friends and complain when their parents tell them it’s time to come home. Probably not very differently from the kids in this photograph.

Someday, someone may look at the pictures we’re taking this summer and marvel at how young everyone looked. Camp Machanaim is gone. But in a very real way, its story continues every summer at Beaver Lake.

this week's winner is:

Roz Plaut

A groundhog, also called a woodchuck

Groundhogs are indigenous to eastern North America and are common throughout upstate New York. The Catskills provide ideal habitat: wooded edges, lawns, fields, gardens, and areas where they can dig burrows.

Groundhogs are actually large members of the squirrel family, they are primarily herbivores, and they can dig surprisingly extensive burrow systems. They hibernate through much of the Catskills winter and are most active from spring through early fall. These longtime Catskills residents are excellent diggers, and enthusiastic vegetarians.
