Business News
Canada extends US cruise ship ban, scrubbing Alaska sailings until 2022.

Impact will be felt by NACM members in Washington and Alaska
The Canadian government has extended its ban on U.S. cruise ships from entering Canadian waters until February 2022.

The move is another blow to the Seattle-based cruise sector, which includes several major operators that traverse Canadian waters and stop in Victoria, on Vancouver Island. Several NACM member companies supply food, beverages and other services to the cruise ships that call in Seattle from May to October.

This also impacts several of our Alaska members who struggled through the loss of the 2020 season. Click below for more:

Canada bans cruise ships for another year, likely halting most of Alaska’s 2021 tourism season
Most large cruise ships that visit Alaska are registered in foreign countries. American federal law prohibits foreign-registered ships from sailing between two American ports unless they stop at a foreign port in between. In order to fulfill that rule, large cruise ships bound for Alaska either start their voyages in Canada or stop in Canada en route.

NACM BCS will be monitoring this story for continued impact on our members. If your company has ways we can help, please contact us.
Frontline workers - hazard pay; Seattle government fails
The Seattle City Council’s decision to force big grocery store chains into paying $4 an hour coronavirus hazard pay is turning into a typical Seattle government story.

Ram through unfunded mandate on business with little input. Get sued. Then portray the squawking businesses as cruel.

Short-term rental operators moving out of Hawaii market
The number of Hawaii properties listed as short-term vacation rentals has declined by as much as half, compared with last year, which is likely the result of the pandemic and new restrictions on the industry.

Towns and businesses across Alaska brace for a second summer without cruise ship tourists
“Just based on what I think now and what happened last year, it’s going to be devastating, not only for the Denali area, but for Alaska as a whole,”...

Legislative Activity and Politics
The state legislatures are in session and actively considering a number of bills with potential impact on the business community. As always NACM BCS is monitoring several of them and is prepared to engage through our lobbyists on those bills relevant to our member companies. See below for more information on the bills we are following as well as other matters of concern.
WASHINGTON
Bills we are watching for you. For more information on any of them, click HERE and type in the bill number on the legislative web site:

SB 5061 - Signed by the Governor: The legislation is intended to help with what would have been a $1.7 billion hike in unemployment taxes for employers through 2025.

The bill slashes the tax employers were set to pay in 2021 by $920 million. And it gets rid of calculations on future tax rates regarding the $1.2 billion in worker benefits given out during the stay-home period last spring at the outbreak of the virus.

The bill passed both the House and Senate with strong bipartisan majorities.

HB 1095 - Concerning the taxation of governmental financial assistance programs - Passed the House; now being considered by the Senate

A business and occupation tax, a public utilities tax, and a retail sales tax exemption is authorized for the value proceeding or accruing from a qualifying grant received on or after February 29, 2020.
ALASKA
Alaska Senate approves remote voting for lawmakers if needed during pandemic
The Alaska Senate passed a resolution Wednesday intended to allow for remote voting if necessary during the COVID-19 pandemic. Senate Rules Chair Gary Stevens, a Kodiak Republican, said the measure would provide another tool to allow for legislative work to continue.

HAWAII
Hawaii lawmakers consider moratorium on commercial business evictions
Senate Bill 563 -- Commercial landlords would be prohibited from evicting tenants under a bill Hawaii lawmakers took up last week to try to assist businesses reeling from the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.

OTHER POLITICAL NEWS
"Powerhouse Duo" gain clout for Washington in Biden era.
The transition away from the Trump era may bring a Mount Rainier-level elevation of clout for Washington state.

Washington Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell will be lifted to powerful committee chair positions that will enable them to steer legislation and spending on everything from health care to schools to aviation and rail — even internet regulation and NASA. The state of Washington will benefit.

Get on top of delinquencies
In addition to regular use of credit reports, history tells us that the sooner you deal with A/R issues, the better off your company will be.

Just as we've noted about trends in credit report use, we are also seeing a trend of letting delinquencies linger. The longer those past due bills are allowed to languish, the harder it will be to get paid.

There's as easy solution. Turn your A/R over to NACM BCS for Collections and we can help get you paid soon. Call us today!
