Comfort Dog Nola Delivers Gratitude to T&K Asphalt
Sgt. Kevin Harrington and his furry partner, Comfort Dog Nola, spread smiles and appreciation on January 26th with a special visit to T&K Asphalt. Armed with a basketful of adorable "Nola Stuffies," the duo stopped by the company's headquarters to thank them for their unwavering support of the Comfort Dog Project.
T&K Asphalt holds a special place in the project's history, being the very first sponsor to believe in its mission. Their continued generosity has played a vital role in bringing comfort and joy to countless individuals in the community.
The visit served as a heartwarming reminder of the powerful impact community partnerships can have. T&K Asphalt's commitment to the Comfort Dog Project is a shining example of how businesses can make a real difference in the lives of others.
And who knows, maybe there will even be more "Nola Stuffies" to share along the way!

Whitman Center was Jenkins Block due to Hirman and George O Jenkins, brothers, who were in business together and owned several companies.
The buildings were destroyed in a fire decades ago.

Climate Can Do: Updating Massachusetts' Bottle Bill for a Greener Future
In 1983, Massachusetts launched the Bottle Bill, encouraging recycling with a $0.05 deposit on soda and beer containers. It worked well, cutting litter and boosting aluminum, plastic, and glass recycling. But times have changed, and this old bottle bill needs a modern makeover.
Two new bills are now before the Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities, and Energy and aim to refresh the Massachusetts Bottle Bill, addressing the challenges posed by today's beverage consumption habits and recycling issues.
The Proposed Expansion
Bill H.3676: An Act to Update the Bottle Bill. This bill seeks to modernize the Bottle Bill to meet current needs.
Bill H.3690/SB2104: An Act to Expand the Bottle Bill. This bill aims to broaden the Bottle Bill's coverage to include any drinkable liquid intended for human consumption.
Expanding the Bottle Bill aligns with today's beverage choices. The original law covered soft drinks, mineral water, beer, and malt beverages—products of a bygone era. Today, our options include bottled water, flavored waters, coffee-based drinks, juices, and sports drinks, which the outdated bill doesn't include. This gap has led to more litter and waste.
Updating the definition of "beverages" in the Bottle Bill removes this confusion. It's simple: water, flavored waters, iced teas, coffee-based drinks, and sports drinks should now have a $0.05 deposit. This expansion is expected to generate about $20 million in new revenue, with $5 million going to the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA). EEA will use these funds for various initiatives, such as municipal recycling incentives, recycling transfer stations, source reduction, and public education.
How To Support The Bottle Bill Expansion
Your actions can help Massachusetts move towards a cleaner, more sustainable future. Join the movement and be part of positive change!

Dr. Chris Jones, Principal of Whitman-Hanson Regional High School
Two Affirmations and One Question
Dr. Chris Jones, in this episode of the SEEing to Lead podcast, discusses how to offer support to someone who is complaining or struggling. He suggests a two-step approach involving affirmations and a question:
1. Affirmations:
- Acknowledge their difficulty and empathize with their situation.
- Use phrases like "Yes, that is a lot of work" or "You're right, this is difficult."
2. Question:
- After validating their feelings, shift the focus to problem-solving.
- Ask open-ended questions like "How can we tackle this?" or "What kind of plan can we make?"
This approach helps the person feel heard and supported while encouraging them to find solutions themselves. Dr. Jones emphasizes the importance of empathy and collaboration in overcoming challenges.
Here are some key takeaways:
- Complaining is normal, but offering support goes beyond just listening.
- Affirmations show empathy and acknowledge the difficulty.
- Asking open-ended questions empowers the person to find solutions.
- We can all be better supports for each other through this method.
Remember, Dr. Jones encourages you to try this approach and share your experiences!

Hot Chocolate warms the heart... share some with a friend
... or someone you want to be a friend.
Chocolate's healing properties are well known. The darker, the better. Warmed and rich. And when I am mindful of the source, I can enjoy knowing it isn't at the expense of children, farmers or our planet.
"All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt." ~ Charles M. Schulz
"You just need a little perspective. Warmed chocolate can give you that.” ~Giada De Laurentiis
"Research tells us fourteen out of any ten individuals likes chocolate." ~ Sandra Boynton
“Because the best gift in life, is just having someone to drink hot chocolate with.”
~Tessa Shaffer, Heaven Has No Regrets
|
My solution for dreary days ~ a snuggle with a good book and hot chocolate!
To check on your source: ask at your local chocolatier for Fair Trade Chocolate. Equal Exchange in WB has cocoa mix.
Enjoy ~ Jacquie
