Happy November!
Watauga County Public Library needs to hear from you!
We are beginning to develop a five-year plan and want to hear from our community about how we can improve library services. Two community engagement sessions are planned for November, so mark your calendars. We'll have a pie drawing at each.
- Tuesday, November 10 at 6 pm at the main library in Boone (pizza served)
- Friday, November 13 at 10:30 am at the Western Watauga Community Center in Sugar Grove (same building as the Western Watauga Branch Library and Senior Center)
This is an important opportunity to make your voice heard, and we look forward to seeing new and familiar faces at our sessions.
Additionally, a survey is available through the following links. This survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete and will help us create goals for our plan:
Survey in English
Survey in Spanish
As far as renovation updates, we plan to put the project out to bid in December. We anticipate renovation work early next year and will share more updates throughout the project.

This fall, the NC Cardinal Library Consortium is testing some changes to save money. This affects how the Evergreen Integrated Library System fills holds.
During a test period from September through November, NC Cardinal is limiting the number of resource-sharing items that are in transit or on a hold shelf for each patron to 10 at a time. Once a patron checks out their items from the hold shelf, their next resource-sharing materials will start making their way to the library
Why is this being done?
Over the course of this past year, NC Cardinal has been analyzing their resource sharing costs as part of a larger conversation about Federal funding and sustainability. They are trying to take small steps to make resource sharing more affordable.
What Will Be The Impact of These Changes?
These changes will not alter the total number of items a patron can request holds for, but it will create delays that would allow for more time for the material to be filled from within the Appalachian Regional Library System, rather than from a library that's further away. The goal is to reduce shipping costs by allowing more opportunity for local items to fill holds.
This change will not restrict the number of holds that can be filled from within Appalachian Regional Library, so any available item from Ashe, Wilkes, and Watauga County's Public Libraries and their branch libraries won't count against your ten items coming from libraries that are further away.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to provide the best service possible to our patrons.
