Thank You to our Catechists!

Throughout this year, we have been blessed by the dedication, compassion, and faith-filled witness of the many volunteer catechists who generously shared their time and talents with our parish community through Religious Education, OCIA, and Kids Word. Their commitment to helping others grow in faith has made a lasting impact on children, families, and adults alike.

We are deeply grateful for the many volunteers who prepared lessons, shared their faith, prayed with our parishioners, and helped create welcoming spaces for learning and spiritual growth. Through their kindness, patience, and dedication, they helped bring the love of Christ to life within our parish community.

Thank you to all of our catechists and volunteers for your faithful service and generous hearts. May God bless you abundantly for the difference you make in the lives of so many.

Care for Real Collection is May 23-24

St. Gertrude will host a collection drive for Care for Real on May 23-24. Our Care for Real collections takes place on the first and fourth weekend of each month.

SNAP is one of the most effective ways to address food insecurity in the United States. However, as eligibility requirements change, many of our neighbors—especially seniors and others without exemptions—are at risk of losing their benefits. New requirements to work or volunteer 80 hours per month and report this to the state can be difficult to meet, increasing the risk of food insecurity.

As a result, Care for Real anticipates a growing need for their services. For more information, including current needs and ways to give, please visit https://linktr.ee/cfrchicago or follow their Facebook and Instagram pages.

We are grateful for your continued generosity in supporting Care for Real as they provide food and essential supplies to neighbors in need.

Memorial Day is next weekend! Please note, the office will be closed on Monday, May 25.

A communion service will be held at 7:30 am.

Please keep in your prayers the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country, and all the loved ones who continue to carry their memory in their hearts.

Parish News

Heart to Heart & Lending Closet News

The Heart to Heart Lending Closet is blessed by the generosity of people throughout Chicagoland, and right here at St. Gertrude Parish.

Parishioner Joe Donnelly recently donated a brand new wheelchair to the Lending Closet. Within a day, the wheelchair was en route to a young homeless man, a double amputee, who is currently living in a bus shelter. The social worker helping this young man called to thank us for the "Cadillac of a wheelchair" and to let us know how deeply appreciative the young man was.

Thank you to Joe and to all whose continued support of our ministry allows us to help those who call.

(Pictured: Joe Donnelly and Marilyn Klein. Marilyn and Joe, parishioners in their 90s, both spent years as volunteer drivers for Heart to Heart. They continue finding ways to support our Ministry. Do you have time to give? Reach out to the Heart to Heart office at 872.296.2537!)

Growing in Faith

“Christ [is seated] far above every principality, authority, power and dominion” Eph.1:21

On this Armed Forces weekend, I remember human moments between people of all faiths:

The picture above is from my third deployment to Iraq on Ash Wednesday 2023. There was no Catholic chaplain at Al-Asad Airbase then, so they’re technically Lutheran ashes. (They welcomed all to their service.) I received the ashes just before meeting with our Muslim Iraqi counterparts nearby, who would greet us with dates, candy, and chai.

On my second deployment to Iraq in 2007, my Humvee passed a destroyed building that clearly had once displayed a Christian cross on top. Surprised, I asked my Iraqi interpreter about it. He paused to think of the right terminology and said, “That’s where the Christians used to store their virgin women. But then the insurgents bombed the building.” Meaning, it was a former convent before the U.S. invasion.

My commander on that deployment was Jewish. He mentioned that Iraq had a thriving Jewish community until they were exiled. Their sacred religious texts were confiscated and later found by U.S. forces at the captured Iraqi intelligence headquarters.

Now that the Middle East is again wracked with uncertain, violent war, I hope we can move beyond fighting over ‘principality, authority, power, and dominion’ and aspire to the ideals written by Brother Hermann Schalück, OFM. Here’s an excerpt:

“All, Muslims, Christians and Members of the People of Israel,

Earnestly aspire to reconciliation…

Lord, have all those of good will from all Religions,

In the North and South, in the East and West, in common responsibility,

Demolish the mountain of misunderstanding...

Fill in the trenches of hatred... and

Make smooth the paths towards a common future.

Make the guns silent in our one world and have, instead,

The appeals for peace resound ever stronger...

For all, without distinction.

O Lord, the one God.”
