Y's Men Travel Group to Focus On Travel Dreams

The Y’s Men Travel Discussion Group will meet tomorrow, Monday, February 16 from 9:00 to 10:30 am in rooms 203-204 at the Saugatuck Congregational Church.

The main topic will be: “I Have Always Dreamed of _______”

Where is that special place you’ve always thought about going to but for some reason haven’t made it happen yet?

Most likely someone in the Group has been there and could help you move forward with that dream!

The desire could be a place, a restaurant, or an experience…

Spouses/partners/significant others are always welcome to attend.

Thursday's Speaker to Address

Human Rights Advocacy in Democratic Transitions

Dr. Jonathan Fanton

Dr. Jonathan F. Fanton will unpack what it takes to move fragile states toward democracy and the rule of law — and what can go wrong along the way.

Why it matters: Democratic transitions don’t succeed on elections alone; they depend on strong institutions, active citizens, and enforceable human rights norms.

Driving the conversation: Drawing on decades of work with groups like Human Rights Watch, Dr. Fanton will outline both breakthroughs and failures in building accountable governments after conflict or authoritarian rule.

About Dr. Fanton:

He is President Emeritus of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a former president of both the MacArthur Foundation and The New School, as well as interim director of the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College.

A Yale-trained historian, Fanton has written on civil society and democratic development and has helped steer major institutions that shape global policy on human rights, international justice, and peace and security. His roles with Human Rights Watch and the World Refugee and Migration Council reflect a career at the intersection of scholarship, advocacy, and public life.

Y's Men Thursday morning meetings are in Hoskins Hall downstairs in the Saugatuck Congregational Church, 245 Post Road East in Westport. Coffee, donut, and bagel social hour begins at 9:00 am, business meeting at 10:00 am, speaker at 10:30 am. Come early and meet your fellow members. Guests are always welcome.

Staples Jazz Band Displays Talented Musicianship for Y's Men

Staples Jazz Band performed for Y's Men last Thursday at The Westport Library.

This week's regular Thursday Y's Men's meeting featured an exceptional concert at The Westport Library Forum by the Staples Jazz Band, under the direction of Kevin Mazzarella. The band displayed musicianship well beyond their years and, as an encore introduced themselves, one by one, to a standing ovation.

The concert is the second of four live performances schedule by the Y's Men's Classical Music Society. The final two, the Staples Stradivarius Chamber Orchestra on Thursday, March 12 and the Art Greenberg Memorial Olga Vinokur Piano recital on Thursday, April 30 are both scheduled in the Saugatuck Congregational Church Sanctuary.

Mindfulness Group Zoom Meeting Set for Tomorrow

The Y's Men Mindfulness Group offers two distinct gatherings for Y's Men. Both are facilitated by Y's Man Dr. Paul Epstein.

A Mindfulness Group Zoom session explores mindfulness practices and emotional resilience on the third Monday of each month. The next Zoom meeting is tomorrow, Monday, February 16 from 7:30 to 8:30 pm. Group members will receive the Zoom link from Y's Man Jeff Rubin prior to the call. Group non-members who would like to attend should contact Jeff at jeffrubinwpt11@gmail.com.

Just for Men is an in-person discussion group that meets on the first Thursday of each month at the Westport Center for Senior Activities.

For further information about the Mindfulness Group contact Paul Epstein at epsteinmb@aol.com or Jeff at the above email address.

Time to Create the Roster of Y's Men Monday Golfers for 2026

Now is the time to sign up for the 2026 season of Monday Golf. It is expected that it will function as last year (subject to confirmation with Longshore and the Parks and Rec Department).

Each Thursday a sign-up request was sent to the entire roster asking who wants to play Monday. Between Thursday and Sunday a final tee sheet was circulated to the assigned players as well as the entire roster. There were five tee times starting at 11:30 am. You could play 9 or 18 holes.

By clicking here and providing the requested information, you will be put on the roster and receive the weekly sign up request. Please be thoughtful when indicating your frequency of playing so we can project if more or fewer tee times are appropriate. Expect to receive follow up information in early March.

Y's Men Fraud Protection Club to Meet March 10;

Hacking Victim to Relate His Experience

The new Y's Men Fraud Protection Club will hold its first meeting on Tuesday, March 10, at 10:00 am in room 211 at the Saugatuck Congregational Church. It will hear the story of a fellow Y's Man who lost a major portion of his life savings through fraud.

His sobering tale of how quickly a life can change because he was hacked should spark some ideas on how we should protect ourselves. The group will discuss what actions can be taken to prevent a hack before it happens.

According to Y's Man Jeff Schwartz, one of the goals of the Club is to develop a preemptive “defense manual” that can be shared with all Y’s Men. "Currently, he says. "no such guide exists. We have to build it ourselves."
