FEBRUARY 2025

Celebrating Black History Month

This month, actively seek out and engage with Black artists across disciplines - from visual arts to music, theater, and film - to broaden understanding and appreciation. Join us in celebrating contributions of Black artists, the power of their creativity to tell impactful stories, and the importance of recognizing their resilience and influence on society, while encouraging further exploration and support of diverse Black voices in the artistic landscape.

Meet artist Celeste Budd, creator of this intricate and striking piece, shown above, called “Balanced Beauty.” Made from stained glass, and glass beads on a 15 inch round, it represents the balance of nosiness and silence. Join her "Quilt Codes Art Interactive" in celebration of Black History Month and learn about quilt codes enslaved Africans used to communicate escapes on the Underground Railroad. Read more about Celeste's work at the bottom of this issue and view her art at Persimmon Art Gallery, Auburn.

Meet Artist

Celeste Budd

Celeste Budd is a stained and bead glass mosaic artist and an active member of the Placer County arts community. She remembers at age seven she melted canyons on top of the radiator. "My Mom was not pleased. But for me watching the flow and the colors come together began a spark," she shared.

Today that spark continues with her stain glass mosaics in which she "especially loves to use transparent glass to let the light be a part of the picture." She also shared that she also loves to focus on themes, currently focusing on Quilt Codes.

In celebration of Black History Month, Celeste is leading a "Quilt Codes Art Interactive" where participants will learn about Quilt Codes, and create their own 6x6 piece of art at the Persimmon Art Gallery.
