Week of September 23-27, 2019
“We are what we repeatedly do.
Excellence, then is not an act but a habit.”

Dear Families and Staff:
The school year is off to a great start! As summer fades into fall, with the changing of the leaves and the colors, we are called to be grateful for all the bounty of nature around us. Nature is always changing, always evolving. At Southern Door, as students and staff set goals for this year, setting high standards gives us the space and the courage to learn and grow.

As we get ready for our big homecoming celebration this weekend, it will be a great time for everyone in our community to come out and show your Eagle spirit! We hope to see many of you there!
Together We Are Eagle Proud and Eagle Strong!

ELEMENTARY STEAM TO RECEIVE $10,000 GRANT
In early 2019, America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education, sponsored by the Bayer Fund, partnered with local farmers to nominate rural schools, and awarded more than $2.3 million in grants to enhance their science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs. Because area farmers answered the call, Grow Rural Education has awarded the Southern Door Elementary STEAM Program in Door County, Wisconsin with a $10,000 grant. Southern Door’s Elementary STEAM Program will use the Grow Rural Education funds to conduct outdoor investigations and help students become better team members and increase their growth mind set.

NEW ASSESSMENTS USED TO PERSONALIZE INSTRUCTION
We are excited to share that our school district is implementing two best practice math and reading strategies to help teachers personalize instruction.

i-Ready is a K-8 assessment that replaces the MAPS assessment those students have done in the past. This assessment is done three times per year so that teachers can use the student learning information to adjust instruction for your child.

PreACT will be taken by grades 9-11 students once a year, in early fall, so that teachers can use the student learning information to adjust instruction throughout the school year. Each year, the State of Wisconsin requires that all juniors take the ACT test to gain insights into their college and career readiness. This will also give students an estimate of what their Junior ACT score might be.

If you have any questions about these new assessments, please contact your building principal.
CHILD DEVELOPMENT DAY – THURSDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2019
This is a free community service which will provide information and assessment on how children, ages 2 years 8 months to 4 years 6 months, are developing. This will take place at the Southern Door County School District on Thursday, October 3, 2019 from 8:00 am – 6:00 pm. Appointments are required. Parents will be receiving a mailing in September. If you do not receive the mailing, please contact Mary Hall at 825-7321, Ext. 2206. If you have any questions about the screener, please contact Missy Ramel, Early Childhood Teacher at 825-7321 Ext. 1110.
HAUNTED MANSION NEEDS YOUR HELP
The Haunted Mansion does a fantastic job supporting so many of our school activities and their needs. Please consider your family's donating time (adults and children alike), either in getting the Mansion ready now (in September), or working the October weekends. Once you experience the fun and camaraderie of this group, you will be hooked for sure! You can contact Sue Marchant at 920.493.4266 or Cory Vandertie at 920.676.1920 if you would like more details.
