Historical Tidbit:
Trolley Connects the Bridgewaters

The first electric trolley line in Brockton was the East Side Street Railway, which opened in November 1888, with great success.
In 1896, a line ran from Brockton to West Bridgewater, Bridgewater and Taunton. The following year, the line ran to East Bridgewater. On July 4, 1897, amid a blaring band, cheering crowds and speeches from the company and town officials, the first electric trolley rumbled down Pleasant St, East Bridgewater.
The route began in the Montello section in Brockton and followed Montello St, to Plain St into West Bridgewater down Belmont St into East Bridgewater center. Passengers who were continuing on would then have to disembark and wait for a trolley to Bridgewater center.
For a time, one could travel almost anywhere in the area, even to Nantasket Beach! Many families journeyed to Island Grove in Abington or Mayflower Grove in Pembroke. In summer, the open sided cars were used for the comfort of the passengers.
In 1923, the William H. Luddy Bus Company began to run buses from Bridgewater, East Bridgewater & Whitman thus signalling the end for an already troubled trolley line, which ceased to operate altogether by September 25, 1929.

Climate Can Do:
Green on the Go

One of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas and carbon emissions in our atmosphere is the use of vehicles: according to Fuel Economy, “Highway vehicles release about 1.5 billion tons of greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere each year—mostly in the form of carbon dioxide (CO2)—contributing to global climate change. Each gallon of gasoline you burn creates 20 pounds of GHG. That's roughly 5 to 9 tons of GHG each year for a typical vehicle.”

How we get from one location to another can have a massive impact on our carbon footprints, and our first goal should be to transition into the use of public transportation whenever possible. The type of vehicle we drive is also incredibly important. The use of gasoline has major implications for the climate because of greenhouse gases associated with crude oil and other petroleum liquids. Another environmentally-friendly option would be electric vehicles. Finally, consider making the switch to bikes, e-bikes, and e-scooters to help reduce your carbon footprint (and help you reach your health and fitness goals!).

Ways to Transition to Sustainable Transportation

  • The MBTA and Regional Transit Authorities offer a range of services to help riders travel locally and regionally.
  • Fixed route services (like the bus and subway) have a reliable regular schedule you can count on and offer discounted fares for seniors and people with disabilities.
  • Learn more about public transport services near you

  • Electric vehicles (EV) are a great way to reduce your greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and reduce the cost of owning a vehicle.
  • Incentives and financing options may be available to assist you in purchasing an electric vehicle and installing an EV charger at home.
  • Learn about electric vehicles

  • Reducing our use of gas-powered vehicles is a key step in tackling climate change. Bikes, E-bikes, and E-scooters produce zero emissions and are much less expensive than cars
  • Learn about e-bike benefits

You're Invited to The Charity Guild's Friendraiser: Get Together For Good!

On Monday, May 20th, 5pm at Shoveltown Brewery, all Charity Guild friends are invited to a Get Together For Good! An evening to support our Charity Guild Food Pantry mission. Funds raised will help us keep our shelves stocked this Spring.

I have been a Charity Guild Board Member for 12 years now and a weekly volunteer on food delivery day for the last 4 years. Every Wednesday you can find my neighbor Patty Henderson and me at 501 Main Street in Brockton. We are some of the volunteers who help stock the fridges with fresh food, like eggs and cheese, and we prep the fresh produce for distribution that day. The team and volunteers have fun working together each week to put away as many as 6,500 pounds of food.

The Guild has faced some large challenges since 2020. Food is so expensive these days and it is incredibly heartbreaking to see just how many more people are in need of our help. The Guild is doing all that it can to help those neighbors - from Brockton and the surrounding towns - who visit us for food.
Those who donate to support our mission give us the ability to keep our shelves stocked week to week. We could not do this work without the generosity of our community members. Whether you are donating your time or your money - you are helping us provide food to local families, individuals and senior citizens. You make this work possible. One way to donate is to visit thecharityguild.org and click on the Donate button. Or, we would love to see you at our Get Together for Good coming up in a few weeks. Come and be a part of our community!
Please join us on May 20th at Shoveltown Brewery at 5pm and bring a friend.
It will be a casual night of good friends, good music by DJ Joe Lupica and good fun for a good cause.
Tickets are $50.00 - small bites included. Cash bar.
