Greetings,
DID YOU KNOW that one of the reasons older adults suffer from sarcopenia, or loss of muscle mass, is pancreatic enzyme insufficiency?
As we age, we slowly lose the ability to produce sufficient enzymes in our small intestine to break down proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. This is called pancreatic enzyme insufficiency.
A recent study in Clinical Nutrition found that about 20% of older adults produce too little lipase to break down fats. After adding a pancreatic/digestive enzyme with lipase, the study subjects digested fats much better.

Steve: Eating more with less calories? How is that possible?
Results from a The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition study support the idea that humans possess a built-in "nutritional intelligence" that helps guide balanced eating. This instinct appears to function best when foods are eaten in their natural form and are disrupted by modern food environments, which causes us to overeat.
Researchers took a closer look at why people eating only whole foods consumed much larger portions of certain foods while still taking in fewer total calories. Participants on an unprocessed diet consistently filled their meals with fruits and vegetables, sometimes eating several hundred grams at a time. They tended to avoid more calorie-dense choices such as pastas and cream. As a result, people eating whole foods consumed 57 percent more food by weight overall. Yet, their daily calorie intake was about 330 calories lower on average.
When I meet with clients for the first time, one of the most common faux pas is they don't consider fruit and vegetables carbohydrates. If most of your carbs come from vegetables and some fruit, it's very easy to eat more with less calories. Moreover, it will bring on satiety much faster.
One of my "go-to" lunches is a heaping pile of arugula with a starch veggie such as baby carrots, topped with a sizable salmon filet, and fruit for dessert. These are high-weight, phytonutrient-rich foods that are less caloric. And I always feel full.

A 60 year-old male came to see Steve. He presented with fatty liver, myriad gastrointestinal issues, dry eyes, among others. Prior to the visit, when Steve was doing his prep, he noticed the gentleman had the highest ferritin level he'd ever seen (721). High levels of ferritin indicates hemochromatosis, or iron overload. There were other blood markers, especially of the liver, that were wildly out of range. Unfortunately, his doctors did not offer much assistance.
Immediately after their initial visit, Steve put him on a rigorous diet, lifestyle, and supplement plan to follow for two months and then they would reassess the blood markers.
After retesting the blood work, his ferritin level went down almost 500 points into normal range. Moreover, his liver numbers that indicated fatty liver dropped significantly and were almost completely within range. Finally, many of his GI symptoms resolved or were much improved.

Recently a patient came in for her monthly adjustment. She was feeling particularly good and said that her sleep had been much better. She was hardly getting up at night and was sleeping deeply. I asked her if she had taken any new supplements or diet changes and she had not.
She mentioned to me at her last visit that she was going to a physical therapist for her shoulder. I asked about it and indeed the exercises were helping her tremendously. She could now push herself up from a lying down position and sleep more comfortably on that side.
I then asked her if she noticed that her sleep improved at the same time that her shoulder improved? She hadn’t thought about it, but then realized that was the case. I explained that one reason sleep can be interrupted is if something physically is off in the body. If so that can create stress signals and prevent restful sleep. That made complete sense to her.
It was fun to see the lightbulb go off in her mind with our conversation. She let me know that this made her truly appreciate the effects of receiving the physical therapy, coming in regularly for chiropractic care, getting yearly consults with Nutritional Concepts and everything else that she does proactively to stay healthy. How all of that leads to many benefits, including sleeping better.
