SWING NIGHT & DANCE LESSON

with SAM ROSS JAZZ

Huge show alert!!! We're very excited to announce on Friday, September 4th, jazz artist Sam Ross is starting up a swing dance night at Jilly's Music Room! This is the debut of the Akron-version of a monthly series he started when he lived in Iowa. We're so happy he's bringing it a little farther east!

Featuring a live jazz band and a professional dance instructor, this show features classic songs from the swing era of the 1920s to the 1950s. These have traditionally been very high energy shows with most of the audience dancing the whole night.

Joining Sam in the band are Jonas Kupchella, Oscar Lacombe and Holbrook Riles, and leading the dance lesson is famed regional professional dance instructor Rachel Itsell.

UPTOWN PRINCE TRIBUTE

THEN

Ever since the release of the movie Purple Rain in 1984, DaVaughn Weber, 3 years old at the time became a humble fan of the one and only Prince. His father Doyle Weber Jr who’s also a musician, took him to see the film numerous times, and the more DaVaughn saw the film he quickly noticed the resemblance of the late star and his father. When DaVaughn’s parents split apart he remained with his mother. Without his father in the home, DaVaughn stated ” Prince reminded me so much of my father that after he left, whenever I saw Prince on T.V or in a magazine, it was like seeing my father again. It became easy for me to follow Prince’s career, and I loved every minute of it”. I’ve always paid close attention to him, how he walked, talked and especially his mannerisms”. Growing into a teen DaVaughn started to notice his likeness to the purple one. Ever since he was a kid, people always told him how much he looked like Prince. He began to see it around at 13. Years later in 2015, DaVaughn decided to dress as Prince for Halloween, it was then he realized that there was something special. He won 1st place at every Prince lookalike contest he attended and started to make special appearances throughout the country.

NOW

“I never knew anything about tribute shows until 2012. I’ve seen Elvis’s impersonators before but never knew of any actual live tribute performances. I’ve always wanted to do just that but didn’t know how to get started or who to talk to. After my photos floated around on social media for a while, I received requests to be the front man for tribute shows. I enjoyed the experience, rehearsing and touring, however it just wasn’t my vision of what I had in mind. During the pandemic, I had a lot of time to think about what I wanted to do. So, in 2021 I teamed up with some very talented musicians who understood my vision and have dedicated themselves to this project” Uptown Prince Tribute.

NEWS & ITEMS OF NOTE

With Akron Pulse,

friends work to shed light on Summit County events

Patrick Williams

Akron Beacon Journal (8/12/26)

Two friends have created Akron Pulse, a platform for extensive event listings throughout Summit County.

The akronpulse.com website gives users the ability to create their own itineraries and does not include advertisements or promotions.

Mac Love and Byron Delpinal, the friends behind the grassroots initiative, say the platform can also help event organizers increase their event visibility and avoid problematic scheduling conflicts.

Akron and other communities in Summit County aren't lacking in events, but there's a need to connect the right people with the right listings, say two friends who are fine-tuning a solution to address the knowledge gap.

Mac Love, artist, co-founder and chief catalyst at Art x Love, and Byron Delpinal, an engineering manager who leads development teams at Pittsburgh-based Branding Brand, have embarked on a new journey with the Akron Pulse events platform.

Love, creative director of Akron Pulse, and Delpinal, technical director, are using the help of artificial intelligence to scrape online event listings from venues and other calendars.

Among the differences of akronpulse.com compared to other event calendars, they say, are the extensiveness of the listings; an ongoing initiative to largely avoid duplicate listings, which has been successful so far; and an easy experience complete with users' ability to create their own itineraries.

"No ads, no promotions," Delpinal, a resident of Green, said of the grassroots project. "This is not a pay to win."

CHEERS!

These reader-nominated mocktails in Akron area

were our favorite,

Tawney Beans and Kerry Clawson

Akron Beacon Journal (8/17/26).

Beacon Journal writers sampled nine mocktails from six establishments in Akron and Cuyahoga Falls.

The writers had different preferences, with one favoring fruity drinks and the other preferring those with nonalcoholic spirits.

The top picks were drinks from High Street Hop House, Stirling, The Green Dragon Inn, Constance and Jilly’s Music Room. (Photo Credit: Tawney Beans/ABJ)

We asked where to find the best mocktails in Summit County, and readers have spoken.

Their nominations came from five restaurants/bars in Akron and one in Cuyahoga Falls.

Once the nominations closed, Beacon Journal restaurant writers Kerry Clawson and Tawney Beans set out to try all eight nominated mocktails in their quest to choose their favorites.

We ended up sampling two variations of one mocktail that was nominated, so that brought the number of mocktails we sampled over a several-day period up to nine.

It was a lot of mocktails and a lot of fun as each of us winnowed the nominations down to our three favorite drinks. It turns out that Tawney likes the predominantly fruity mocktails best while Kerry gravitates toward the ones that include nonalcoholic spirit substitutes or alcohol-removed wines in them.

THE CRONES wsg SUDDEN MIDDLE-AGED DEATH SYNDROME

The brainchild of frontwoman Tracey Thomas (#Akronsound, Unit 5), THE CRONES play energetic and exciting cover songs from your favorite female-fronted New Wave bands of the ’80s. Tracey and her group of talented female musicians are all over the age of 50, and they have been rocking capacity crowds since their debut in July of 2023. Their rapid rise in popularity is easy to understand as the band’s seasoned musicianship shines through entertaining renditions of songs made famous by Blondie, Joan Jet, Kate Bush, Cindi Lauper, The B52’s, and many more. Akron-based Sudden Middle-Aged Death Syndrome (SMADS) is a collective of four friends and music fans focused on having fun and sharing some of their favorite songs. Raised on Saturday morning cartoons, the glory days of early MTV and college rock, SMADS plays songs by The Ramones, Blondie, Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Husker Du, Pavement and others. With original music in the works, SMADS continues to expand its repertoire. Since forming in 2023, the band has performed at Buzzbin, The Matinee, Jilly's Open Mic Nights and during the 2025 Highland Square Holiday Stroll.

JILLY'S OPEN STAGES

LIKE AN OPEN MIC, BUT MORE LIKE A GIG

Jilly’s launched OPEN STAGES in 2026 to support and promote the local music scene by providing a platform for artists to showcase their skills and work on material.

We’re opening our stage on (most) Wednesday nights to artists and bands who want to hone their craft on stage in front of an audience; work on stage presence and banter, try out new material, have a live practice, work through sets before a tour or really big gig, make connections. All styles, genres and levels welcome. Unlike an open mic, JILLY’S OPEN STAGES is more like a gig. We’re offering venue support. Click that button to the right to learn more.
