The Future of Work is Diverse, Inclusive, Just and Equitable
GlobalMindED closes the equity gap by creating a capable, diverse talent pipeline through connections to role models, mentors, internships for low-income students, returning adults, First Gen to college and inclusive leaders who teach them, work with them and hire them.

Egyptian Immigrant and First Gen Student in Cairo to MBA and Career Coach - Office DEI Programming & Outreach Manager at UMKC: Meet Youssef M. Mekawy
13 students and 3 faculty/staff from the University of Missouri Kansas City attended GlobalMindED this past June. Today, we are sharing the story of Youssef, and tomorrow we will share feedback from the students.
Plan now to bring students from your institution to GlobalMindED's 10th anniversary June 17-19, 2024 in Denver.
What is your personal story?
In 2009, I started my college Journey at Al-Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt, studying Simultaneous Translation (English<>Arabic). My career coaching career passion started in 2011 when I co-founded Spread Your Skills (SYS), at my University, Al-Azhar University Cairo, Egypt—an organization with a goal to support college students with their career goals. In fact, one of the pictures I included was from a C.V. writing session that I took the lead on as part of SYS (lower left).
In 2013, I traveled from Egypt to the U.S. to follow a passion for career coaching. As an undocumented Immigrant and a first-generation student, I battled barriers to achieve my professional goals. In 2017, I earned my Bachelor of Arts, from North Central College, in Human Resources Management, and Communications, with an independent study focusing on Intercultural Communication Training. in 2020, I also earned my Master's in Business Administration with a focus on Coaching and Organizational Development.
I served in the capacity of college administrator and a career coach at a variety of higher education institutions, including a community college, a liberal arts private college, and world-ranking universities. I currently work as a Career Coach at UMKC, with over 6 years of experience in higher education. I have presented at local and national conferences from the Early Talent Summit at UMKC to the National Association of Colleges and Employers 2022 conference. With a passion to help and support underserved students, I continue to guide first-generation college students in their career journeys.
What key moments in your life led you to where you are today?
Coming to study in the U.S. wasn't easy. My initial U.S. embassy scholarship application was rejected in 2012. I applied again and thankfully my application was accepted in 2013. Navigating immigration, college, and career life alone, thousands of miles away from family, in a new culture, using my limited 2nd language abilities, was not easy. But I found my home away from home. I found my community of support and the mentors who helped me to keep pushing forward and achieve my professional and career goals. Fast-forward to 2023, I started my own small business - Ummah Career Lab LLC. I lead this organization providing career guidance workshops and giving back to the community that supported me during my career journey.
Where does your passion to serve come from?
INFORMATION IS A KEY! 10 years ago, as a first generation to college student, having the information and tools necessary to control the narrative of my career story gave me the confidence to keep developing a new climax for my story. It gave me the strength to keep pushing forward. I want to be able to provide that to my students. The beauty that comes with the work I do is that I am not only writing my story, but I am also helping others write and redirect the course of their story. And, I try to leave a positive impact on each story.
How can GlobalMindED help you reach your goals?
The networking & mentorship opportunities would be of great help!
