Aug. 2, 2023

Neighbors,

Yesterday the county's public safety agencies, led by the Police Department, held the countywide National Night Out event. Thank you to everyone who came out to the neighborhood events held across Hunter Mill District. We kicked the day off at the Reston Community Center at Hunters Woods, then visited several other events including Reston Town Center, Cathy Hudgins Community Center, Golf Course Square, and Pinecrest Rd. to name just a handful. National Night Out is an opportunity for communities to enjoy an evening together and meet with our public safety personnel. Knowing your neighbors and fostering community spirit helps to make our neighborhoods safer. I encourage you to keep the National Night Out momentum going and reach out to your District Stations to schedule meetings with your HOA, get information on Neighborhood Watch or to get a security assessment.

Here are some photos of the festivities:

The kickoff was held at Reston Community Center, Hunters Woods.

With staff and Captain Oluwa at Cathy Hudgins Community Center at Southgate.

A great showing of community spirit at Golf Course Square – thank you John Pinkman for organizing!

Please note that my staff is taking much deserved time off after a busy year (and with a busy fall coming up):

  • The Hunter Mill District Office is closed the week of Aug. 7.
  • The Hunter Mill District News will be on a two-week hiatus and will be back on Aug. 23.

Regards,

Walter

Lake Anne Economic Visioning Study Update

The Economic Visioning Study for the Lake Anne Commercial Revitalization Area (CRA) is entering Phase Two, which includes an assessment of individual property owners’ interests and willingness to partner on implementing the vision. This phase is expected to take approximately three months. A series of one-on-one meetings will be scheduled with individual property owners soon. The findings of Phase Two will shape the scope of work for a potential third phase of the Economic Visioning Study, which would investigate the feasibility of implementing the various components contained in the vision plan. Assuming funding is available, Phase Three of the study is anticipated to begin in the first quarter of 2024.

Phase One of Lake Anne’s Economic Visioning Study concluded earlier this summer and included a series of focus groups, an online survey, and several in-person workshops, conducted by the county and consultant StreetSense. The outcome of this phase is substantial alignment among community members on an economic vision that is both aspirational and grounded in market realities. Electric Metro Buses Coming

Last week in my role on the WMATA Board of Directors I had the opportunity to tour Metro's first zero-emission bus. Besides being better for the planet and quieter, it has several customer friendly upgrades, including new fareboxes, charging ports, and digital passenger information screens. I look forward to seeing zero-emission buses in Hunter Mill District and throughout our region in coming years.  Learn more.
