Worldwide Avionics Sales Exceed $1.6 Billion in First Half of 2023
The Aircraft Electronics Association recently published its second-quarter 2023 Avionics Market Report. In the first six months of the year, total worldwide business and general aviation avionics sales amounted to $1,601,414,712.48, or more than $1.6 billion as reported by the participating companies. Second-quarter sales increased 5.9% sequentially from the first quarter of 2023. During the second-quarter months of April, May and June, sales increased 16.2% compared to the same time frame one year ago. With more than $823 million in sales during the second quarter, it marked the highest quarterly sales volume in the history of the report.

The figure represented a 19.2% increase in total sales compared to the first six months of 2022, which was driven by a 31.7% increase in forward-fit sales compared to the same time frame one year ago. Also of note, the industry garnered the largest quarterly forward-fit sales volume in the history of the report with more than $490 million in avionics sales to OEMs. It is only the third time that quarterly forward-fit sales topped $400 million. Cincinnati Avionics keeps the 'little guy' flying safely
In the nearly 30 years that Cincinnati Avionics has been operating, it seems everything has changed and yet so much remains the same. Based at Clermont County Airport in Batavia, Ohio, home to its parent company Sporty’s Pilot Shop, the service center specializes in single-engine piston and light twin aircraft as it has since the beginning. Loyal customers still travel up to 200 miles or more to have their aircraft maintained by the experienced technicians. The pristine white hangar still glistens under the lights.

“We started Cincinnati Avionics based on the needs in the area. At the time, there really wasn’t anyone catering to small piston airplanes,” said Chuck Gallagher, president and chief executive officer of Eastern Cincinnati Aviation and executive vice president of Sporty’s.

Cincinnati Avionics is a division of Eastern Cincinnati Aviation, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sporty’s. In addition to the avionics shop, it operates an FBO and is responsible for managing and maintaining the airport. The flight school, called Sporty’s Academy, also falls under the ECA umbrella as does its dedicated repair station. More...

Theory & Practice: GPS
The Global Positioning System, or GPS, can provide position information anywhere on Earth. Like satellite-based communication systems, GPS is divided into three segments. Anyone using GPS for navigation is in the user segment. The control segment includes hardware, software and personnel used to maintain the system. The space segment includes the space vehicles (satellites) themselves.

For the space segment, the Space Force maintains a minimum of 24 operational satellites in a medium-Earth orbit at approximately 12,500 miles in altitude. There are six orbital planes occupied by at least six satellites in each plane. Today, satellites are broadcasting up to four civilian signals. The original civilian frequency is known as L1, 1.57542 gigahertz. The latest version of this signal is called L1C. With older satellites still in orbit, both the L1 and the L1C signals are being broadcast on this frequency. Counterintuitively, L1 and L1C are considered the first and fourth GPS signals. More...
