Postscript

With Open House on Sunday, we thought this would be a good time to do a short profile on senior Jackson Skaare, the president of the Student Government Association.

Besides the SGA, Jackson is a member of the National Honor Society, the treasurer of the Aviation Club, a four year member of the prep ice hockey team and, last but not least, carries a 4.2 GPA.

In an interview the other day, Jackson said he has a number of colleges on his radar and is very interested in possibly attending a service academy. Just this summer, he attended a camp at the US Coast Guard Academy and, last month, had a candidate visit weekend at the US Naval Academy.

Four years ago, Jackson was living in Frederick. He and his family were trying to figure out where he would go to high school. He said he heard some hockey teammates talking about DeMatha. "I said to myself that I might as well take a look. I quickly fell in love with DeMatha."

Jackson's family moved to Laurel to be closer to DeMatha. His mother, Jessica, at the same time, took a job working in the admissions office.

Jackson said he did not know anyone else before attending but it did not take him long to make friends. "I met a few people at a crew camp," he said. "It took but a few weeks to get to know others. I tell people it really helps to get involved in an activity to meet fellow students."

Jackson says his time at DeMatha has gone by fast. Last May, through a school sponsored program, he received his First Communion and was Confirmed at the Mass at the end of the school year.

Has DeMatha met his expectations? "It has exceeded them," Jackson said. "The school puts a huge emphasis on support. There is the GOALS program and Academic Support, but there is the intangible of the faculty and staff supporting you behind the scenes. They want you to succeed."

We wish Jackson success with the rest of the academic year and then, wherever life may lead him.
