COMMUNITY BOOK CLUB ANNOUNCES NEXT BOOK

NLI's Community Book Club continues to remain popular among Institute friends and partners. We are wrapping up Book #3, Just Medicine: A Cure for Racial Inequality in American Healthcare by Dayna Bowen Matthew. Dozens of community members have contributed to ongoing dialogue on social justice in previous groups that discussed The Color of Law and The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness. These weekly conversations are led by NLI facilitator GiGi Elder.

Today, we are proud to announce that book #4 will be "The Color of Mind" by Derrick Darby and John L. Rury. The book and subsequent discussions will address racial and social injustices within the educational system. This next edition of NLI's Community Book Club will begin soon. Stay tuned for details!
CIVICS WORKSHOP SERIES - POST ELECTION WRAP-UP

This fall, The Institute hosted four sessions within its Virtual Civics Workshop Series - "Demystifying This Season of Voting". The series started in September , just as the 2020 Presidential election was reaching high gear. This series allowed community members to learn, engage and participate in civic dialogues about one of our most important responsibilities as citizens: Voting.

The last workshop took place on November 10th and served as a post-election wrap-up. Jennifer Lumpkin of Cleveland VOTES was our guest. Check out our Facebook page to view these sessions and to keep up with more opportunities like this in the future.

NLI ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
KIM FOREMAN

Kim Foreman is the Executive Director for Environmental Health Watch (EHW). Kim has nearly 20 years of experience working on environmental justice issues in Cleveland and joined EHW in 1999 as a part-time health educator. She has served in the role of Executive Director since 2015. Kim is also a graduate of Neighborhood Leadership Cleveland's Class 18.

As the Executive Director for EHW, Kim has focused on Environmental Justice Issues and adverse outcomes of environmental exposures, both indoors and outdoors, that disproportionately impact poor and minority communities. During her time with EHW, she has developed, implemented, and managed various local, direct service, grassroots projects, worked on national projects, spoken at local and national conventions, and has helped EHW obtain national attention for its work through outlets such as the New York Times and Al Jezeera English.

Kim became passionate for the work of EHW through some of her own lived experiences, including living through some of the same challenges that the clients they serve face. It wasn’t until joining EHW that Kim realized how severely children and families were being impacted by environmental hazards in the home, like lead.

States Kim, "The value of community engagement is based on the intention and relationship building. There is value in listening, learning, supporting, resourcing, and application. The priorities of the parties we are engaging should be lifted in real tangible ways. The opportunity to participate in the NLI classes early in my career introduced me to people who were committed to creating better communities, balanced with the tools we needed to become better change agents. I love being a part of a large community of leaders connected by NLI."

To be considered for the Fellowship, each candidate must submit a cover letter, a short essay discussing why the Fellowship opportunity is appealing, a detailed resume and two letters of recommendation. Please also indicate how you learned of the position. These materials should be combined into one PDF document for submission and are due no later than 5 p.m. EST on January 8, 2021.
