Joanne's Meeting and Event EGuide

I
n the manor of “transparency” (actually I love this word and concept), I send the same EGuide out twice, four days apart. Last issue someone unsubscribed, because I send to many emails. Hmm. I have don’t know that I have ever sent issues closer than every two weeks and frequently longer. I realized it was because he was getting 2 in 4 days.
So here is something for you to know. If someone is using Constant Contact and schedules a resend. It only goes to those who did not open the first time. If mine, or anyone else’s annoys you, but you don’t want to stop getting it, just open the first, even if you don’t read it then. Personally, it doesn’t bother me and a few days later I may actually be able to stop and read it, so I appreciate the reminder instead of digging for the previous one. And since my open rate doubles after the second email, I know some of you have the same going on.
Just in case you missed the last edition, here is a link to it for you
Got a question? Want me to find something for you? Did you get this forwarded to you? If you would like to be on the list, text MEETGUIDE to 22828. Or just sign up

Things that interest me….
and maybe you!
|
OK, usually I try to mix quirky, educational and interesting in this section. Since I have not done one of these in two months, I am a little slow to get up and running. So these really are more on the quirky and interesting side, but it is winter where I am, and quirky is good.
Personally neither of these two things I will pursue---I am already done with winter! Although I will admit being curious…
Inside Skiing Anyone?
The Points Guy
This has been in the works in New Jersey for over 10 years…
Or Maybe you are more into skating at the airport?
The Points Guy
And of course, if you read this regularly you know I am very curious about the TWA hotel! It would probably be pretty cool to see while you are landing too!
Did I mention it is winter where I am?
“The greatest pool in the history of the world”
USA Today
And for those of us who are dreaming of warm weather and swimming pools…I wonder who will be the first meeting planner to use this—it can be set up as an amphitheater. A pool. As an amphitheater.
The World’s Biggest Hotel Chains are Turning Their Attention to Food Waste
Conde Nast Traveler
Something most of us struggle with in the meetings and events industry---how much food waste there is.
10 of the World’s Wackiest Skylines
Travel Channel
We have probably all flown or driven into cities and been amazed at the skylines. Here are some of the most interesting. I’ve only seen two of these---lot more to go!

What you can and can’t get through customs around the world
The Points Guy
I pretty much knew meat, produce and plants, but did you know even dried meat/jerky can be a problem? Of the fruit you were served on the plane? How about any medicine, even “over the counter “with Codeine? Birth control pills? E-Cigarettes? All good information to know, especially since every country is different---including with the penalties.
19 Travel Accessories I Acquired This Year and Don't Know How I Lived Without
Who What Wear
I bought my first pair of compression socks a few months ago—they have a design on them, so I did not feel like I was aging (perception is reality). I cannot believe how comfortable they are, and I want more. Also just bought a new passport holder. That’s a story for another day…
Mobile Passports Now allow You to Renew in 24 hours
I do not have the Mobile Passport app, and would love to hear from you if you do. I am familiar with Rush My Passport, through its division called Rush My Visa (Yep that is quite the story). My experience with them has been spectacular.
What is Rent the Runway and How are they Partnering with W Hotels, and why does it pertain to meetings and events?
A really long introduction.
You may have heard of Rent The Runway. (
RenttheRunway.com)
It was created for many reasons, but one was to answer the question women have asked, especially for formal attire: “If a guy can rent a tux, why can’t we rent a gown?”
Anyone who knows me will tell you that clothes have never been a big thing for me---my women friends hate shopping with me, I am very logistical and practical when I shop. My family was also very frugal. My idea of shopping was to find a pair of slacks I like, and buy them in every color I would wear. Done. Until I could no longer wear them.
A few years ago, I had nothing to wear for a video I needed to shoot. My life had changed, my body had changed, and my wardrobe was not working for anything except being around the house (working from home). For some reason I looked at RTR which had expanded to be more than formal wear. The fact that I could order a very nice dress for a very reasonable price, and return it (ethically), appealed to me. I did not want to spend a lot of money on a wardrobe that I might only wear occasionally, or even once.
Sustainability
:
Also, I started reading how the largest problem in the trash stream right now, worldwide, is fabric. In the US alone, households throw out an average of 70 pounds of fabric a year. Although one might argue having your clothes delivered is not sustainable, I feel that may of the things RTR is doing, more than makes up for it.
So why am I posting any of this and what does it have to do with meetings and events.
First of all, it is a way to have either a once needed outfit, or an ever changing wardrobe
.
A meeting planner I met the other day said she has a formal event almost every meeting, multiple times a year, with the same people. So she has a lot of formal wear she has worn…once. Also, many of us for many reasons, end up with our body shape changing. It’s frustrating to keep buying new clothes, only for them not to fit a few months later. And recently, when I taught the CMP at Sea, I needed appropriate clothing in January. And I live in Massachusetts.
Some women who travel, are just having the clothes delivered hotel ---saves trying to cram everything in carry on. Or, as you will see, RTR has now partnered with W Hotels to have a closet of clothes available.
So far only a few, but it is a brand new program that has been reported on in
CNBC
,
LA Times
, and
CNN
, among others.
Right now they are only in the United States.
And on a different note…and this may come across “salesy” and if that bothers you, don’t read it. I get it.
I
could go on and on, about how it has helped my clothing issues. You can rent a piece at a time, or do an unlimited subscription, and even some in between. I know for a lot of people the subscription actually cuts the money they spend annually on clothes. I am also going to stick this in. Since I am a passionate customer --I get offers. I am not asking you to try it, and yes, I think I get entered in a contest or something if you do, but that truly is not the point.
If you have any interest in trying it, here is a great offer for the unlimited subscription: $200 Off A 2 Month Trial Offer good through 5pm (EST) on Monday, February 3rd. Code is RTRFAM15BD046 Anyone can use it.

Career and Jobs -
They are not the same!
What are you looking for this year? A Promotion? Raise? New Job? All three?
New Research –People Judge Your Competence Based on Your Clothes (In Under 1 second)
Inc.
What I found interesting is it was not the style of clothes, but the quality. I was thinking of the “old days” when you always wore a suit to an interview (Men and Women). That has evolved since now you are usually told wear one level up from what the office culture is. At first I did not think this took that into account, but it does by talking about T-shirts and other more casual wear. The point seems to be, no matter what the appropriate style is, wear the highest quality you can—even if it is jeans and a t-shirt. They come at all price points.
For women who may be in interview phase, see my note under Clothing, Packing, Travel about why I am now a Rent the Runway fan.
