October 2025 | Newsletter

Dear Reader,

So many of you stopped by the Friends "Taste of the Town Raffle" booth at the Franklin County Fair recently — what a pleasure to see you all. If you haven't yet thrown your hat in the ring, the link to buy tickets for this year's big raffle is included in this newsletter — bon chance!

One of the most wonderful parts of meeting community members and library supporters at the booth this year was having the chance to learn about folks' favorite books as part of our interactive fair-booth activity. This year's Fair theme was "A Blue Ribbon Affair," and visitors to the Friends' booth wrote the titles of their own "blue ribbon books" on apple stickers, which we then added to the trees on the walls of the booth.

The genres of favorite books ranged widely from our youngest to eldest visitors, and on my shift I was touched by how seriously people took the task of assigning a blue ribbon book to our tree. Some adults selected "children's" books for their apples; adults and teenagers alike selected SciFi novels; many people seem to enjoy long-running series. What these interactions highlighted for me was the way that, for many of us, books hold our hearts and minds for years, even decades; they mark us, and their value persists.

I'm grateful that we have such a beautiful, serviceable library with knowledgable, dedicated staff where we can enjoy and revel in our blue ribbon books — those we already know, and those waiting in the stacks to meet us. Perhaps one of the following books, recommended by fellow Franklin County Fair visitors, will find its way onto your bedside table this fall:

No Flying in the House

The Moon is Always Female

Cold Comfort Farm

Harrold and the Purple Crayon

The Book Thief

Harry Potter

9:00 AM and 1:00 PM

There have been thousands of people using our new library every month for the past two years. As we walk through each of the rooms, it looks clean and gleaming. The custodian does an amazing job for such a huge public space. However, if you slow down and look at the hardly accessible corners, windowsills, or dust on the bookshelves, you see that which is impossible for the custodian to keep clean. If you walk outside, the foyer corners need some work, as do the outside windows and sills.

Hence there is a day that you, with your family and friends can come and help get the library to be as sparkling as the day it opened. This is where community comes together. This is also a dream come true for all you OCD folks.

Volunteers are invited to participate in a deep cleaning of the library, both inside and outside. This event will take place rain or shine, and all volunteers will be able to sign up for specific areas of the library where they wish to help. The more volunteers who sign up, the faster the cleanup will be completed!

Just click on this link for more information and to volunteer:
