Thursday, January 18, 2024 - The Reverend Dr. Roger Ferlo | |
Dear Friends in Christ,
I'm so pleased that our guest preacher and forum speaker this Sunday will be The Rev. Dr. Roger Ferlo. A much-beloved professor during my time at Virginia Theological Seminary in the D.C. area, he also baptized our son, Isaiah, 17.5 years ago. His biography is extensive and the highlights are below; he is also a wonderful story-teller. Many thanks to the Scrivners for helping to finally bring him to Christ Church.
In the midst of the arctic temperatures this last week, I was so pleased that our Outreach group organized the gift bags of hats, mittens and scarves for those getting a hot meal at The Gathering. This came the day after a team of parishioners went to Sojourner Family Peace Center to serve and eat a meal, as well as play games and enjoy the company of women and children seeking shelter there. These small acts of mutual kindness and connection from a local church help bring Christ's healing warmth into our increasingly cold and brittle world.
In the Hope and Peace,
Seth+

The 93rd Annual Meeting of Christ Church
January 28, 2024
The meeting will be held following the 9:30am service both in-person and on YouTube. The Annual Meeting is the time the parish comes together to hear and discuss the past year and plans for the upcoming year and to vote for new leadership positions. The meeting will be livestreamed for viewing, but voting will be in-person only. Here's the Meeting link for January 28th at 10:45am
Look for a special 93rd Annual Meeting email early next week. Attached to this special email will be two documents: the Ministry Reports of 2023 and the 2024 Leadership Candidate Biographies.
Voting for the leadership candidates at the meeting will be open to the 2024 Communicants in Good Standing (CIGS) at Christ Church. By diocesan definition, CIGS include: “those Members who are sixteen years of age or older and who have been faithful in the past year in corporate worship (Episcopal canons define corporate worship as coming to worship at least three times in the previous year) and in working, praying, and giving for the spread of the Kingdom of God.” A list of those who are CIGS as of January 2024, and thus may vote at the Annual Meeting, is posted in the Good Shepherd Room and the Great Hall. If you find an error, please contact Fr. Seth.
If you are a CIGS, you may email Heidi for a copy of the Financial Reports of 2023 beginning next week. This document includes a detailed financial statement for 2023 as well as the 2024 Budget.
| |
Heidi Behlke will be out of the office from 1/11-1/22. She has recently mailed final statements for 2023. If you have an outstanding pledge balance for 2023 and would like to make a payment, please indicate 2023 in the memo section of your check. If making a payment via VANCO, please send an email to heidi@christchurchwfb.org indicating the amount and that you would like it applied to your 2023 pledge.

Reading Poets - Reading Dante
by The Rev. Dr. Roger Ferlo
Why do 21st century writers and thinkers—both secular and religious-- take such interest in a 14th century poet?
(Dante Alighieri, 1265?-1321). At least five English-language translations have appeared in the past five years. It’s not just about the Inferno, appropriate as that apocalyptic vision might seem in these perilous days. Come find out why. No previous knowledge of Dante, poetry, Italian, or the 21st century assumed.
Roger Ferlo is president emeritus of Bexley Hall Seabury Western Theological Seminary Federation, and Scholar-in-Residence at the Newberry Library in Chicago. He holds an AB from Colgate University, where he serves as trustee emeritus. He received a Ph.D. in English from Yale University and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Colgate in 2010. He was for ten years rector of the
Church of St. Luke in the Fields in Manhattan. Author of three books, he is priest associate at the Episcopal Church of St. Paul and the Redeemer in Hyde Park, Chicago, and an avid amateur cellist and pianist.

This month:
The Green Team is highlighting ways to green your home. Here in the Weekly Broadcast and on the bulletin board at the top of the Sunday School stairs.
This week: how to cut down on your plastic use and disposal. (see links to samples below)
• To save leftovers Pyrex containers are safe effective ways to freeze and or reheat…old school but better than using plastic containers and wraps. No PFAS getting into your food or FAMILY!
Now there is beeswax. To shape it over a bowl, use the warmth of your hands to conform it to the container. This is a great hostess gift and a way to share a great idea with others! See link below.
• Prepare double batches to save time on a busy day, and use less energy.
• Never buy another kitchen sponge again! There are various products that are made of recycled products that are disposable after many wipe ups! Cotton rags work also, and who doesn’t have an old cotton T shirt with holes in it? Cut it into several rag sizes for kitchen, car washing, windows, etc. Or try Swedish wipes, again another great hostess gift that is attractive! See link below.
Check out these eco-friendly products:
1.Bees Wrap
2. Reusable Swedish Dish Cloths
Many items like these are also available at Outpost and Whole Foods.
If you shop at stores that do not offer these products, ask at the service desk…..every time you go in. Eventually maybe they will get the message and support vendors that make earth friendly products.

Good News!
The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin, or PSC, estimates that eight utility-scale solar projects came online in 2023, accounting for 639 megawatts of power. The state’s utility regulator anticipates another three projects will come online in 2024, accounting for 650 megawatts.
According to RENEW Wisconsin, each megawatt of electricity generated via solar farms can power around 190 average Wisconsin homes. That means the solar projects online this year and next will be able to power nearly 245,000 households.
