Friends,
It has been such a pleasure to hear from you as I’ve reached out via phone, email, and at events. If we haven’t had a chance to talk yet, don’t worry! I’m still making and taking calls! And I look forward to seeing you at events over the coming weeks, including at the debate Wednesday evening at Abbey Inn at 8 PM.
One thing I’ve been hearing from you frequently is your concern with government overreach. Advocating for citizens and for local decision making has always been important to me. I have watched our local officials wrestle with the legislature over the past decade as the Utah House and Senate try to enact one-size-fits-all solutions to what are really local issues. The government closest to the people will be the most responsive to the people. I believe our local school board, city councils, and county commission are far more accountable to us in Washington County than state (or federal) government are.
My family has been in Utah since 1847. They helped settle cities and towns from Tremonton to Grafton. I feel a deep connection to any number of Utah cities and towns. We can learn a lot from each other. I frequently collaborate with my counterparts in other counties. But what works in Cache County or Tooele County may not be the right fit for Washington County. And there is no doubt that the people in Salt Lake, Ogden, and Provo are going to see things differently from us in Santa Clara, Ivins, and St. George.
If you are concerned that our legislature at times oversteps its bounds, I’m with you. I promise to protect the authority of local governments and the rights of our citizens.
Together, we’ve got this!
