One of the Society's goals is to promote successful reintegration into the community.

Y's Men Wives to Meet Weekly at Library Cafe

With the Y's Men returning to the Saugatuck Congregational Church for Thursday morning meetings, Y's Men wives and significant others plan to continue to meet as they did during Social Hour at the Compo Beach pavilion.

Now they will meet at The Westport Library Cafe where they can socialize, or join others who may want to walk and talk.

As Compo did during the summer, the Library venue provides a place for wives to gather after driving their spouses to the Thursday meeting and waiting to pick them up after the meeting ends.

Helping the Next Generation Financially -- Dennis Adler Provides Guide to Thoughtful, Controlled Giving

Dennis Adler, CFP, addresses Y's Men last Thursday.

The bottom line: Financial planner Dennis Adler urged Y’s Men at last Thursday’s meeting to help children and grandchildren—but not at the expense of their own retirement security.

Why it matters: Adler said younger generations face higher household costs, reliance on two incomes, and uncertainty about future retirement benefits. His advice: Give thoughtfully, with a plan.

The retirement risks: Before making major gifts, Adler said retirees should account for:

• Inflation

• Longer life expectancy

• Market volatility

• Long-term-care costs

Be smart: A healthy portfolio today may not remain healthy after a prolonged downturn. Adler’s central caution: Do not give away assets you may need later in life.

Three questions to ask:

1. Do you want to give?

2. Can you afford to give?

3. What is the most useful purpose for the gift?

Ways to help: Adler cited options including a 529 education account for a grandchild, naming children as direct beneficiaries on life-insurance policies, or making targeted gifts for milestones such as graduation, marriage, or a first home.

Plan, then talk: Adler recommended a thoughtful, controlled giving plan that helps family members without creating dependency or avoidable tax burdens. He also urged open family conversations about estate plans, financial accounts, passwords, and the information relatives might need during an emergency.

About Adler: Dennis Adler, CFP®, is a fee-only fiduciary financial planner with more than 35 years of Wall Street experience. He started AdlerFinPlan in 2017 after working in bond-market research and as a strategist at a New York-based hedge fund.

Fundraising Gala for Holocaust Memorial October 13

Fairfield County's first Holocaust memorial monument was dedicated earlier this month on the Fairfield University campus. The monument, a sculpture entitled She Wouldn't Take Off Her Boots, was the brain-child of Y's Man Paul Burger, founder and chairman of Shoah Memorial at Fairfield, Inc.

Funds are needed to maintain the sculpture and its accompanying secondary-school curriculum on the Holocaust and genocide — designed to meet Connecticut's mandate to teach this history in public schools.

Everyone is invited to the first fundraising event, a Gala on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. Called L'dor V'dor — "From Generation to Generation: Forging the Living Chain of Holocaust Remembrance” -- it will be at Il Palio Restaurant in Shelton from 6:00 to 8:30 pm.

The program features multi-generational Holocaust survivors and prominent speakers. Only attendees can bid in the live auction, which includes important artwork and a custom piece by Memorial artist Victoria Milstein. Sponsorships are still available.

Many Y’s Men contributed their time and money to help Paul’s four-year-long project succeed including Dick Eisner, E. Bruce Borner, Jim Lape, Bill Kutik and Dick Kalt.
