"The Dance the Coup Couldn't Cancel"

Dear Jody,

I was in Egypt for two weeks and returned to a changed nation. I recently shared my reflections about the tour, and our terminated State Department Award, with Tom Phillips. In our conversation he prodded me to think about how we did the right thing to continue the tour despite the funding cut, not just for the artists, the company, our Egyptian partners and audiences but also for our country. I hadn't thought of it that way before. You can read the interview in Medium.

My previous "letters" from Egypt described the first two legs of our journey: three shows at the Falaky Theatre (Cairo) and one at the famously re-built Library of Alexandria. Our third tour stop was Aswan, about 500 miles up The Nile from Cairo, where we performed at the delightfully-named Fawzy Fawzy Youssef Open Air Theatre.

The desert wind blows a thick layer of dust over everything in Aswan and it took three cleaning crews to ready the stage for our two shows. With dusk setting in, we performed as the evening breeze helped flap our wings. We asked the children in the audience about their favorite trees—mango was the clear winner—and so it was featured in our post-show workshop. Afterwards, the kids rushed us, showering us with love and asking for selfies.

On our last day in Egypt, we added an unplanned tour stop at The Littlest Lamb home for orphans. This was one of the most inspiring moments of the journey. Mira Riad, the founder, has poured heart and soul into building a loving, supportive home for abandoned and traumatized children. We spent the afternoon with the kids, sharing a Communi-tree performance and workshop. We also had a delicious vegetarian lunch, prepared from foods grown on the home's sustainable farm! The kids were so joyful, we were all deeply touched.

We are still working hard to raise the money to replace our terminated $30K State Department's award. If you missed the original story, you can read about it Dance Magazine.

We are deeply grateful for all of you have given so generously to help us through this crisis! I'm thrilled to report that we we've received donations for $18,378!

This is enough to keep us solvent, but still we need your help to close the gap and send us marching into the battles yet to come.

PLEASE GIVE NOW!

As I ask, I recognize that many of you may be experiencing disruptions in livelihoods as never before. I wish all affected the best for navigating these chaotic times and for continuing the important work to be done. Now is when we must care for one another and act together.

My deepest gratitude for all your support and good wishes!

🕊️Peace,

Jody
