Check out this past month's highlights:
|
For September, we kicked off our Five Core Programs: STEM, Art, Health & Wellness, Leadership, and Sports. The core programs are an important factor in the success of our mission. Our members at Reseda engaged and participated in each program and discovered new interests.
We incorporated the diversity of Hispanic Heritage Month. We want to highlight the Art Program led by Coach Sarah where the members Painted nature scenes using watercolors, inspired by the vibrant colors and themes found in Hispanic art.
| |
|
At Calabash Charter Academy, our DEI program has really made an impact this month. These past few weeks we have been focusing on Hispanic Heritage Month, all of our youth, ranging from 2nd grade to 5th have had the opportunity to learn more about this yearly remembrance of Hispanic culture. As the members participated in the art programs led, our coaches took the time to share history and facts to engage the group in discussion.
At Justice Street Elementary, our STEM program featured a fun Marble Maze Run activity. The kids built their mazes using simple materials and tested them with marbles, while making changes between test runs to improve their designs. They loved the challenge and had a great time trying out different ideas. The students enjoyed the program because it made learning fun through hands-on activities while sparking their creativity and problem-solving skills.
|
At Serrania Elementary, our STEM program recently included an exciting activity where students designed and built their own paper airplanes. While creating paper airplanes is often just a fun pastime, we elevated the experience by introducing a design competition and a thrilling race! This program not only encourages creativity and engineering skills but also fosters teamwork and friendly competition among the members. A unique aspect of this initiative is how it seamlessly blends play with education, allowing students to explore concepts of aerodynamics and design while having a blast.
STEM Program: Making Paper Airplanes
Second-grade members at Mosk Boys & Girls Club used art materials to learn about infrastructure and build their own model bridges. Several membersbuilt bridges out of paper that were able to sustain the weight of their water bottles! We love to see our members’ creativity and ingenuity. Art and science combine for a world of fun at Stanley Mosk Elementary Boys & Girls Club!
|
-Gary M. Thomas Clubhouse-
| |
At the Gary M. Thomas Clubhouse, we have found that a lot of our members greatly enjoy soccer. This month, that insight led us to bringing in a soccer program that was developed and ran at one of our other elementary sites. Soccer Superstars has been focusing on different drills so that our members can build their basic skills in the game. The difference is noticeable in every scrimmage!
At the Teen Center, our sport for the month of September was volleyball. There are currently 10-15 members actively involved in our volleyball sports program and about 5 of our participants went on to make it onto their schools volleyball team. The end result of the program is to take away social and team building skills as well as learning how to properly deal with the emotions that come with a win or a loss. I would like to highlight our very own Coach Jomira who has been leading our sports program.
|
-Canoga Park High School-
This semester we started our Bilingual Immersion Program with Coach Christian. Students learn the differences between cultures as well as prefixes and grammar. Canoga Park High School has seen a high number of newcomers. Students come from different countries (Mexico, El Salvador, & Guatemala). These students are all from different grade levels and now get to create new friendships with others who share similar backgrounds.
|
This month, we kicked off our art program with ceramics led by our art lead, Jenna. Members learned how to create unique jewelry plates and charming elephant sculptures. Jenna's guidance helped members explore their creativity and develop their ceramics skills.
|
This month, our leadership program Keystone started its first community project which was creating blankets for dogs in animal shelters in the community!

As an individual who values the work of Boys & Girls Club of the West Valley, you can make an immediate difference when you become a monthly donor. Monthly donors help provide high-quality programs that serve kids and youth across the West Valley during the most critical hours of the day, after school.
You can help us reach our goal this month!
-
20 monthly donors at $10 will provide one afternoon of services for one kid every month.
-
20 monthly donors at $25 can help subsidize one kid's transportation to the Clubhouse for one day every month.
-
5 monthly donors at $42 provide supplies for one class offered to 20 kids every month.
-
5 monthly donors at $84 provide a STEM kit for one class of 20 kids monthly.
-
2 monthly donors at $100 provide two youths at the Gary M. Thomas Clubhouse with a full scholarship.
We serve the kids daily because when you partner with us on our mission, because of you we can inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible adults.
