Letter from the president of ACVA

December 2022

Dearest friends of ACVA –

Greetings of the season to you and your families. This is a sacred time of year, when Surya begins the Uttarayana course of his journey through Heaven, and we have an opportunity to resolve issues which we may have been curating for a few months now.

I hope that you are still enjoying Jupiter/Guru in Pisces, even more now that he is in direct motion. There’s an opportunity to increase our spiritual understanding, and compassion because of this sweet position of Jupiter. Saturn is, of course, about to improve his expression when he ingresses to Aquarius, his second favorite rasi, in about a month. Just these two simple placements are at our disposal to improve our lives – even a little bit – and that of others, too. The message of the grahas in Q1 of 2023 could be: Cultivate Compassion (Pisces) and Be Accountable to your own Proper Duty (Saturn.)

We begin the next season (winter in the Northern Hemisphere and summer in the Summer Hemisphere) with the drama of Mars. Mars is in Taurus and has been stationary and then retrograde in the last part of Taurus since mid-November. It has been far north of the Ecliptic, and very bright. For those in the Northern Hemisphere, it has been quite the dominant celestial object at night, living up to its ancient reputation as an omen of war. It will end retrograde on January 13, but will remain bright in Taurus until March 13, when it moves to Gemini.

Saturn makes headlines as it leaves its own sign Capricorn on January 18, after two and a half years at the peak of its power. It will be in its other sign, Aquarius, but with a different set of zodiacal flavors and energies, more related to the abstract and intellectual rather than the raw exercise of power. Jyotishis will be ready for a new set of clients whose concerns are activated by Saturn’s change of residence. Also on January 18, Mercury finishes a retrograde period and begins forward motion. This is a good date to mark in your calendar, as new ventures may have a better chance of success after this time.

Gola – Winter 2022-23

By Julene Louis,

Jyotish Visharada, ISAR-CAP

Gola is the observational astronomy limb of Jyotish. Throughout winter we can observe Guru, Mangala and Shukra in the evening sky. Shani has evening visibility until early February and will appear in the morning sky in mid-March. Budha appears in the evening sky until early January, then appears in the morning sky from late January to mid-February.  Chandra’s 27.5-day cycle through the zodiac provides opportunities to witness conjunctions with each visible graha every month. Go out and locate the grahas in the night sky as they travel through rashis and pass the primary stars of nakshatras. Commune with them in the heavens and experience a level of Seeing, beyond a computer screen, that deepens your understanding and practice of Jyotish.

Winter kicks off with all five visible grahas present in the evening. Look low along the western horizon to locate Budha and Shukra as sunset begins to darken the sky. Guru will be high and bright above the southern horizon. Mangala will be bright and reddish in color high above the eastern horizon. Shani, currently the dimmest of the evening planets, will be the last to pop into view above the WSW horizon. On the evening of December 24th USA observers can look slightly left of Chandra to locate Budha and Shukra. Observers in India can locate Bhuda and Shukra to the left on Chandra on December 25th.

Saturn's Transit in Aquarius: A Sea Change

January 17, 2023, to March 29, 2025

Juliana Swanson

Please note that I am a sidereal Vedic astrologer and my calculations are based on the sidereal zodiac, Lahiri ayanamsa, not on the tropical system used by most western astrologers.

On January 17, 2023, Saturn will transit into Aquarius, the sign of the Water Bearer who pours forth the spiritual energy of wisdom and healing. This new transit of Saturn constitutes a sea change in the world and in our lives.
