Digital Mapping Program for Institutions of Higher Education

When law enforcement and other emergency first responders arrive on scene at a school to respond to an active attacker, a fire, or a medical emergency, seconds count.

Building on Virginia's successful K-12 Digital Mapping Program, the Commonwealth's Digital Mapping Program for Institutions of Higher Education provides participating institutions with access to standardized digital maps designed to enhance emergency preparedness, improve situational awareness, and strengthen coordination among campus public safety personnel and local and state first responders.

Collaborative Response Graphics® (CRGs) technology can provide:

  • Site-specific common operating pictures
  • Accurate floor plans, high-resolution imagery, and gridded overlays combined into a single map
  • Enhanced communication and shared reference points during emergencies
  • Access to facility maps on mobile devices and laptops
  • Improved emergency response pre-planning
  • A standardized mapping format to support coordinated, multi-agency response

Resources from SchoolSafety.gov

SchoolSafety.gov provides schools and districts with actionable recommendations to create safe and supportive learning environments for students and educators.

This year, they have created a Back-to-School Toolbox of helpful safety resources, including an assessment tool for physical security measures, a school emergency operations plan checklist, cybersecurity resources, lessons plans and classroom activities on digital safety, tips for responding to bullying, and more.

SchoolSafety.gov also offers a list of Back-to-School Safety Actions, which outlines important steps you can take to make your K-12 community safer, whether you're a school or district leader, educator, staff member, parent, student, or member of law enforcement.

Data by the Numbers

This graphic, reflecting data from the 2025 School Safety Survey, demonstrates the prevalence of cyberbullying in our students' lives. This October for National Bullying Prevention Month, VCSCS encourages you to explore our resources on cyberbullying and consider how to help students be safe and kind online. You can check out our cyberbullying training on Benchmark, bullying prevention resources from the Virginia Department of Education, request to host a training on cyberbullying, or our Be Safe Virginia curriculum.

Each year, VCSCS uses the School Safety Survey to assess safety conditions and improve safety across schools in the Commonwealth. Have you reviewed last year's safety survey results yet? You can view all previous School Safety Surveys here under "Previous School Safety Audit Survey Results," and you can learn more about School Safety Survey requirements here.

Is there someone from your school whom you would like to recognize for their positive contributions to school safety? You can submit them here to be included in a future VCSCS newsletter!
