Stephen Hansen was a head High School Baseball Coach for 27 years. He started his teaching and coaching career at Tooele High School from 1990 - 1997. In 1998 he moved to Mountain Crest High School. Stephen retired from teaching after the 2020 school year but coached one additional season, retiring after the 2021 season.
In 1996 he was named the State of Utah 4A Coach of the Year after the Tooele Buffaloes claimed their first and only State Championship. He was also named Utah 4A Coach of the Year in 1999 when his Mountain Crest team earned their first-ever State Championship. He was awarded his 3rd 4A Coach of the year in 2009 when he again led his Mountain Crest team to another State Championship.
Coach Hansen has coached his teams to 449 wins, with 15 Region Championships, 3 State Championships, and 2 State Runners-Up. His teams qualified for the State Baseball Tournament in 26 of his 27 seasons. In addition, he started the Mountain Crest Legion Program in 1997 and is currently serving as the Utah American Legion Baseball State Chairman.
Coach Hansen has previously held leadership roles as the President of the Utah High School Baseball Coaches Association from 2005 - 2006 and 2019 - 2020. He serves on the NHSBCA Region 7 All-American Committee and has presented at two separate NHSBCA Conferences. One of Coach Hansen’s most significant accomplishments has been creating and maintaining “The Yard” at Mountain Crest High School, which won the NHSBCA Region 7 Field of the Year in 2020-2021.
Stephen and his wife, Jill, have been married for 35 years and have two children, a son named Trace and a daughter named Jori, who is married to Spencer Coombs. They are the proud grandparents of 3 grandsons, Schofield, Harrison, and Kendrick.
