Celebrating 80 Years
A Richardson Chamber Retrospective
| | In honor of our 80th Anniversary, we are taking a decade-by-decade journey through the Richardson Chamber of Commerce’s rich history. | | |
The 1960s were a period of great progress in Richardson, earned through strong community leadership and supported at every turn by your Chamber of Commerce.
It was during this boom that three key Richardson institutions were born:
-
The University of Texas at Dallas: Founded in 1961 as the Graduate Research Center of the Southwest by Texas Instruments pioneers Cecil Green, J. Erik Jonsson, and Eugene McDermott, the private research center was formally gifted to the state in 1969 to become UTD.
-
The Richardson Symphony Orchestra: Established in 1961, bringing world-class cultural arts to the rapidly expanding community.
-
Richardson General Hospital: Established in 1966 near Spring Valley Road and Waterfall Way, it represents the beginning of local, hospital-based medical care in Richardson. Today, the original legacy of Richardson General Hospital lives on through the multi-campus Methodist Richardson Medical Center.
As Richardson’s population skyrocketed from 16,810 in 1960 to over 56,000 by 1970, Richardson Independent School District expanded rapidly, opening dozens of new elementary, junior high, and high schools to welcome incoming families.
To support its growing membership, the Chamber built its first dedicated office building at 318 E. Main Street (shown above).
Richardson's unprecedented growth didn't go unnoticed. As local historian Steven R. Butler notes in A Sesquicentennial History of Richardson, a 1960 issue of Texas School Business marveled at a community "transformed by the magic wand of electronics," coining a catchphrase that defined the decade: “Remarkable Richardson.”
The Chamber embraced the phrase, running a two-page spread in The Dallas Morning News sponsored by 49 local businesses. Throughout the 1960s, headline after headline celebrated "Remarkable Richardson" and its spirit of innovation, culture, and growth that continues to define our community today.
Stay tuned for next month’s newsletter, where we’ll visit the transformation of the 1970s.
As the Chamber marks its 80th Anniversary, we’re honoring this incredible legacy with our $80 for 80 Years campaign. Help us ensure the next 80 years are even more transformative than the last by giving today.
