Summer 2024

President's Message

The role as a professional chemist in Alberta may not have seen as much diversity, challenge or reward as it has in recent years. The value and contributions of professional chemist across our province, and indeed our country and the world, should be – must be – recognized. Upcoming changes to Alberta legislation governing the Professional Governance Act (PGA) are being developed, and legislation expected to be introduced in 2025.

It is hoped that changes to the legislation will help recognize the professional chemist’s role “to protect the public interest and the interest of public safety by safeguarding life, health, and the environment and the property and economic interests of the public.” From environmental monitoring and testing, energy and natural resource development and infrastructure, manufacturing and production, pharmaceuticals and health, municipal water and waste water management, new and developing technologies and innovations, and so many more areas, Alberta professional chemists provide many of the essential services for the public and our people.

I look forward to continuing to work and represent the great professionals in this field as the new President of the ACPA.

ACPA President,

George Collins

Meet Our New Executive Director

Introducing our new Executive Director Chris Swyngedouw

Chris Swyngedouw is a retired Calgary based professional chemist, well attuned with the goings on of the ACPA. Chris was President and Past President of the Association from 2012 to 2016, during which he hired the now retiring Executive Director Kathy Janzen.

His direct experience in sitting on boards of directors, technical and academic committees throughout his career, will help the ACPA moving forward during the next years.

After obtaining his PhD from the University of Calgary, Chris moved from being a research chemist to a lab chemist, to an R&D chemist, an environmental specialist, then to become active in lab management, consulting, technology transfer, and finally to group technology leader-chemistry.

Tips for Filing Your PDC's

Tip #3: It is conference season!

So make sure you keep a copy of your receipts for your conference, seminar, workshops, and courses.

Take a photo of your name tag.

Jot down some notes on how many hours you spent in sessions, courses, exhibits, workshops, etc.

Remember you can claim 1 PDC/hour.

Then drop everything into the PDC folder you started at the beginning of the year for handy reference at ACPA membership renewal time at the end of 2024.
