Hero Moment: The Revolving sushi bar Surprise

Every so often, a dining experience becomes more than just a meal. It turns into a moment of delight. That’s exactly what happened at Shinjuku Station in New Jersey, a revolving sushi bar that elevated dinner into something remarkable.

What made it stand out?

  • Simplicity & abundance: For a flat $35, guests enjoy an all-you-can-eat menu with no hidden tracking, no counting plates, and no sense of being monitored. It is built on trust, an unspoken virtue that customers will eat until satisfied, not exploited. That mindset alone creates a feeling of freedom.

  • Innovation in service: Orders are placed via iPad, five at a time, and arrive at your table by robot, complete with a prompt showing which shelf to pick your dish from. Layered on top of this futuristic system is a conveyor belt gliding endlessly with appetizers, sushi rolls, fruit, and desserts. Guests are free to explore and indulge, mixing spontaneity with convenience.

  • Human connection: The waitress, although not central to the delivery mechanics, was brimming with enthusiasm. She explained the ordering process with energy, checked in frequently, and brightened the evening with her smile. When a favorite item (watermelon) was not circulating, she slipped away and returned with a plate of it, saying simply, “no problem.” That small, personal gesture carried enormous weight.

  • Quality & artistry: Each plate was beautifully presented and delicious, proving that speed and novelty did not come at the expense of flavor or care.

  • Value & fairness: For the price point, the offering felt generous, almost indulgent. Guests left not only full but impressed that they had received true value alongside an extraordinary experience

This restaurant embodied multiple CX Virtues: trust, delight, innovation, empathy, and fairness. They blended robotics with human warmth, abundance with artistry, and efficiency with personalization. It is proof that when service design embraces both technology and humanity, it transforms the ordinary into the unforgettable.

Wisdom in Words

“Be our guest, be our guest, put our service to the test. Tie your napkin 'round your neck, cherie, and we provide the rest." Lumiere- Beauty & the Beast

Byte-sized Learning

Most brands are stuck in neutral. Forrester’s 2025 CX Index shows 73% made no progress, while more declined than improved. The message is clear: without bold action, customer loyalty and growth are at risk.

TIP of the Week

Design for Delight, not just Delivery

Meeting expectations keeps you in the 73% that stay flat. Exceeding them, through small surprises, empathy, or a touch of innovation, earns loyalty and turns routine interactions into memorable experiences.

Timeless Fun

Driving through my neighborhood the other day, I spotted a little group of four youngsters on bikes, balancing two pizza pies as they laughed and lingered on the corner. It could have been a snapshot from 30 years ago. Yes, kids are still out on bikes. Yes, they still chase down pizza, ice cream, and candy. And yes, they still enjoy each other’s company.

Only one of them had a phone in hand. The rest were simply being kids. It was refreshing, almost like watching time fold in on itself.

There are still ice cream trucks circling the block, with children running out in anticipation. There are still moms pushing strollers with newborns. Sidewalks still carry chalk hopscotch marks. Lawns still display stork signs, birthday banners, and congratulatory balloons.

Yes, it is still a beautiful world. Hold onto that hope.
