Join Us in Supporting Bedford County's Best & Kindest

We are living in evolving, peculiar times. There seems to be a dearth of "nice" in all directions. I strongly believe that this is why the grants that the Bedford Area Educational Foundation encourages and supports are so vitally important. They not only inspire innovation, they inspire collaboration. And where there is collaboration, trust forms. And where there is trust, there is kindness. These grants that we fund support diversity, equity and inclusion; which are really just terms for being "nice".

According to the Search Institute (2025), building trust and learning in the classroom is often about lifting up students, communicating high expectations, and your belief in their ability to reach those expectations. Everyone should feel valued and challenged, and be valued and challenged by their peers. Trust and kindness do not mean weakness. To the contrary, they mean strength. And don't we all want strong students? The grants that the BAEF funds do just this. They "entertain, educate, excite and inspire"...a term I borrowed from Colonial Williamsburg's former President, Robert Wilburn, for whom I worked many years ago.

I hope you all will consider supporting the BAEF and our mission to fund grants that support creating student leaders who are, quite simply, "nice".

Most Gratefully,

Jay

News from

Ryan Steffen, BAEF Board Vice-President

Happy Spring!

After 21 years as an educator in the Cincinnati area—both in the classroom and running an extracurricular theater program—I made the bittersweet decision to step away from teaching. But the heart of public education has never left me. That passion led me to the Bedford Area Educational Foundation. It’s an honor to be part of a board that empowers teachers with funding to bring creativity and personal connection into their classrooms.

I’m also fortunate to now work at the Bower Center for the Arts, where I get to witness the incredible energy and imagination students bring through our camps, classes, and exhibits—especially the Bedford County Public Schools Art Shows. It is a joy to see these students proudly bring family members and friends to see projects they are working on in school. We were also the host for the BAEF's Spring Social!

Reading the innovative grant applications we receive from local educators is one of the most gratifying parts of my role, especially knowing we’ve supported projects like a comprehensive K-12 mental health program. These meaningful initiatives are only possible thanks to the generosity of our donors. If you believe in the power of creative, student-centered education, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to help us continue this important work. Your support truly makes a difference!

BAEF at Work in our Community:

Bedford's Best

Bedford County Public Schools in partnership with the Bedford Area Educational Foundation uses the Bedford’s Best program to recognize two staff members per month in our school division who go above and beyond to make a difference in people’s lives every day. Nominations can be made by anyone with first-hand knowledge of the work that our staff member is doing.

We would like to thank Georgia-Pacific for sponsoring Bedford's Best for the 2025-2026 School Year!!
