Scout Safety Moment: Poisonous Plants

Millions of Americans—many of them Scouts and Scouters—will be affected by poisonous plants each year. Almost everyone has heard the warning “leaves of three, let it be.” Despite training to identify them on sight and efforts to avoid them, almost everyone has stumbled through a patch of poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, or one of several other plants that can cause an uncomfortable itch, a rash, and often blisters.

Volunteer Recognition Hub

Behind every great Scouting experience is a volunteer who helped make it happen. They’re the leaders who give an extra hour when an hour is needed. The mentors who help other volunteers succeed. The people whose service reaches beyond their own unit and creates opportunities for young people across a district, a council, or even farther. The Heart of Virginia Council’s new Volunteer Recognition Hub makes it easier to recognize those extraordinary Scouters and learn about the many awards available to celebrate service, leadership, achievement, and impact. From training awards and the District Award of Merit to specialized service recognitions and some of Scouting’s most distinguished honors, the Hub can help you find the recognition that fits the service.

College can offer life-changing experiences to those who choose to go that route. It’s also crazy expensive. That’s why the National Eagle Scout Association grants scholarships each year to Eagle Scouts who choose to continue their educational journey in college. “NESA scholarships aim to ease some of the financial burden of education and provide a platform for you to amplify your impact on the world,” says David Ehrlich, NESA vice president of finance and scholarships. “It’s not just about what you can achieve; it’s about the positive change you can bring to your community and beyond.”
