Zenith Aircraft News and Updates
Today, August 19th, is officially recognized as National Aviation Day in the United States, to honor the history and development of aviation (on the birthday of aviation pioneer Orville Wright) and to promote public interest in aviation. Today also, GENERAL AVIATION NEWS published the story about the return of the One Week Wonder project to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2027, and KITPLANES.com published the cover story about the 40th anniversary of the iconic STOL CH 701 design from designed Chris Heintz. At Zenith Aircraft Company, we’re proud to be part of the aviation community - helping to build airplanes, making history, and inspiring the next generation of aviators. Happy National Aviation Day!
The popular One Week Wonder aircraft building project that creates a finished airplane in seven days is returning to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh in 2027, as attendees are invited to help construct a Zenith CH 750 Super Cruzer, a design unveiled at EAA AirVenture 2026.
The airplane is being built by and on behalf of the Aspiring Aviators Aero Club of Winter Haven, Florida, which will fly the completed aircraft following the build. The project will begin on Monday, July 26 – the opening day of EAA AirVenture 2027 – with a completion goal of Sunday, August 1. It marks the fourth One Week Wonder project at AirVenture in the past 15 years, joining aircraft built in 2014, 2018, and 2022. The first project (in 2014) was the Zenith CH 750 Cruzer build. Watch a short time-lapse video of the seven days.
| The completed (and painted) One Week Wonder from 2014, a Zenith CH 750 Cruzer. | “The One Week Wonder’s goal is to showcase the relative ease of building a kit aircraft – seeing is believing,” said Charlie Becker, EAA’s director of chapters and communities & homebuilt community manager. “AirVenture attendees can participate in the activity and discover more about such concepts as weight and balance, propeller installation, and fuel flow tests. It also highlights EAA’s popular programs and support for aircraft builders.” | The project will start on July 26 just as a typical kit arrives from Zenith. Those attending AirVenture can participate by assisting with airframe riveting and becoming a permanent part of the builders’ log. In addition, all are invited to help select the paint scheme for the finished aircraft, which will be inspected and ground run during AirVenture. The finished airplane will then go directly to Aspiring Aviators for use in its flying club. | |
“This will give students the opportunity to experience aviation in a way that very few young people have,” said Brian Hughes, president of Aspiring Aviators. “More than simply building an aircraft, this project represents the power of hands-on learning, mentorship, teamwork, and the aviation community coming together to inspire the next generation. After the build is complete, the aircraft will continue its mission as an educational tool, providing students with ongoing opportunities to learn about aircraft operations, maintenance, and flight.”

The Zenith CH 750 Super Cruzer is designed for current FAA rules, as it is bigger and faster with more capability than previous models while also being easier and faster to build. The three-place aircraft has greater cross-country capability, a 1,900-pound design gross weight, and 800-pound useful load.
“Aviation technology has changed enormously through the years, but the spirit of individual initiative has not,” said Sebastien Heintz, president of Zenith Aircraft. “It’s been said that building an airplane is worth a college degree. The young people involved with us in the project will have an amazing educational experience in the best tradition of EAA. In addition, being center stage at Oshkosh shows everyone how achievable building an airplane can be.”

| | Zenith Aircraft Company is taking its popular hands-on workshop classes on the road again, returning to central Michigan, to the Livingston County Airport (KOZW) in Howell, about 55 miles west of Detroit. The workshop will be held October 9th and 10th, 2026. During the workshop each participant builds and assembles their own Zenith aircraft rudder tail section from a standard Zenith kit. The two-day workshop concludes once participants have successfully completed assembly of their own rudder tail section. The event is being organized by local Zenith builder / pilot Steve Aupperle, who flies a Zenith STOL CH 750 powered by a Viking (Honda) engine, and local EAA Chapter 1056. The workshop is being supported in part by Martina and Oliver Reik (Zenith CH 750 Cruzer pilots), owners of Midwest Flying Machines, a professional builder assistance center located west of Detroit. The hands-on workshop class will start on Friday morning, October 9th, at Livingston County airport and will conclude the following day. Watch a short video from the 2025 Michigan workshop.

Zenith will also host an informal regional fly-in gathering for Zenith aircraft owners, flyers and enthusiasts on Saturday (October 10th). “We have a great community of Zenith aircraft builders and pilots in Michigan and surrounding states,” said Sebastien Heintz, Zenith Aircraft’s president. “We look forward to meeting with them and seeing many of their flying Zenith projects.” All Zeniths are invited to fly in for the activities, and enthusiasts and current builders are invited to drive in to attend. Camper parking at the event is permissible.

Upcoming workshops at the Zenith kit aircraft factory in central Missouri:
September 16 & 17 (right before the Homecoming) | October 8 & 9, 2026
|
| | Zenith Aircraft's hands-on workshop classes give you the chance to learn the skills and tools needed to build your own airplane while constructing your very own rudder tail section for one of Zenith’s popular designs, such as the high-wing Zenith CH 750 series or the sleek low-wing Zenith CH 650 cruiser. Participating at a workshop is an excellent way to learn about building your own kit aircraft, and to learn of the many advantages of owning and flying an airplane that you’ve built yourself. For many, building an aircraft (from a kit) is a very rewarding experience, and today’s modern kits make it easier and quicker to build than ever before. Standard workshop fees are just $375.00 (or $425 for the CH 750 Super Duty or Super Cruzer models) and include the complete rudder kit for a Zenith aircraft. Additional helpers (spouse or other family members) are encouraged to attend and can participate for free. Prior registration is required for the rudder workshop classes and class size is limited.

Celebrating 40 Years: STOL CH 701 "Sky Jeep"
"Forty years ago this year, Chris Heintz’s CH 701 first flew. That alone would be reason enough for a celebration. The 701 is one of the most consequential designs in the history of experimental aviation — a short-takeoff utility airframe that did exactly what it set out to do, kept doing, and never needed reinventing. Chris Heintz passed away in 2021, and the work he started in a two-car garage in Ontario in 1974 is now carried forward by his sons — Sebastien at Zenith Aircraft Company in Mexico, MO, and his brothers at Matt, Michael, and Nick at Zenair in Canada. The homebuilding community owes the Heintz family a great deal, and KITPLANES has said so before. We say it again here."
