Rick Nolte,
"Scoutabout"
Ahoy HHYC!
As I write these words Kim and I are back in Friday Harbor, having been cruising around the San Juans and Gulf Islands. Our plans to travel north into Desolation Sound were scuttled due to foul weather predictions, so we seized a good day to traverse the Strait of Georgia into Vancouver. We stayed 3 days at the RVYC reciprocal dock at the Coal Harbor Marina, and truly had a lovely, very active time.
The marina abuts beautiful Stanley Park, which offers beaches, swimming pools, hiking and biking trails, historic sites, first nation Peoples exhibits, and much more. There was also "The Great Outdoor Comedy Festival" going on in the park, which drew in many thousands of folks. Whether staying in Coal Harbor, or around the corner into several False Creek mooring options, Vancouver is simply magnificent by boat, and also via any other transportation alternative.
We cut our stay short by a day to take advantage of favorable seas on the Strait and enjoyed a 60 nautical mile southern journey on virtually flat seas; and a favorable push from the current. We will be gradually making our way back to Seattle over the next week. Since we met our HHYC friends for the Bremerton Bridge Blast event on June 26th, we have traveled 847 nautical miles, that included 26 moorages, 73 hours underway, with a maximum speed achieved of 22 knots. And the fun isn't over yet!
The next HHYC meeting on September 8th at 6:00 PM will be a Zoom Meeting, and I encourage all to attend, as this is our first opportunity on the heels of a wonderful cruising season. The link to the meeting is here, and on the club calendar.

Later that week, September 11-13 is the annual HHYC Rock the Dock cruise-in at Bell Harbor downtown. This year we are fortunate to have our own DJ Robert Dahlin serving up joyful rocking tunes, along with his golden karaoke tenor. Time and space are short, so if you want to come and participate in the fun and frivolity, the time to register is now. Kim and I look forward to seeing many of you there.
Indeed, more fun is coming in October...on the 2nd through the 4th is "Mahogany and Merlot" hosted by Mike and Sue Burke, and on October 30th, the HHYC Commodore Ball Yay!! This year we will again celebrate at the Murano in Tacoma. They did a fabulous job for us at last year's ball, so we're using them again.
Please make your reservations directly with the hotel (info is on the HHYC event calendar). To make it easier for us to track attendance and plan, please also register on the HHYC website, where you can pay via Zelle. When reserving with the hotel, you will get a discounted rate by saying you're with HHYC.
With the heart of the cruise season winding down, it's probably timely to plan our off-season maintenance, improvements, and repairs. As we all know, boating is a labor of love, but that being said, I think I'll take a few days off before I begin knocking off the myriad things on my list. We look forward to seeing and hearing from you soon. Stay safe, happy, and healthy
Rick & Kim
