Father's Day is did not become a national holiday until 1972. It all started with a young woman, named Grace Golden Clayton, whose father was a Civil War veteran and wanted to honor all the fathers especially those who have died. So, a Father's Service was organized and held at the family church in July of 1908.
Another woman, Sonora Smart Dodd, wanted to honor her father who was a farmer and a Civil Veteran too. She also wanted to honor her father's efforts to raise her and a her 5 brothers after their mother died in child birth. Sonora's inspiration came while attending a Mother's Day Service in 1909.
In 1972, President Richard Nixon officially signed into law that designated Father's Day will be celebrated on the third Sunday in June.
