Worldwide, communities are rising to demand governments and financial institutions take bold and immediate climate action to protect our planet for current and future generations. About Stockholm+50
Stockholm+50 is an international meeting convened by the United Nations General Assembly, and one of the largest gatherings of global governments in 2022.
Since the 1972 Stockholm conference, civil society has played a vital role in pushing for the implementation of international policies and frameworks uplifting social justice and environmental projections. Right now, we need governments and businesses to listen to civil society and take urgent and bold action in alignment with the goals of climate justice frameworks and the Paris Climate Agreement. WECAN will be engaging with governments and financial institutions at Stockholmd+50, advocating for women's leadership, just climate action, and the end of fossil fuel production through the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative at Stockholm+50
|
|
In the lead up to Stockholm+50, the Fossil Fuel Non-proliferation Treaty is holding a pre-summit in partnership with the Stanley Center for Peace and Security, and the Nordic Council. The pre-summit will be attended by Indigenous leaders, policy-makers, diplomats, the Stockholm+50 Youth Task Force and key civil society leaders from across the world in order to discuss how we can work together to manage a global just transition away from fossil fuels, including through supporting a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.
The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty is an initiative to phase-out fossil fuels and fast-track climate solutions inspired by the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. We are honored that WECAN Executive Director Osprey Orielle Lake sits on the Steering Committee for the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, and we look forward to participating and advocating for the treaty during Stockholm+50.
2022 must be the year that governments act on their promises, and immediately phase out fossil fuels to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius. Phasing out fossil fuel production, and fast-tracking progress towards safer and more cost-effective alternatives, will require unprecedented international cooperation in three main areas – non-proliferation, global disarmament and a peaceful, just transition.

HAPPENING TODAY
Sound the Alarm for Wet’suwet’en
Thursday, May 26, 4pm PT / 7pm ET
|
|
The Coastal Gaslink pipeline and associated LNG terminal is the largest private fracked gas investment in Canadian history. The Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs have been resisting the construction of the fracked gas pipeline on their territories for more than a decade, and the hereditary chiefs of all five Wet’suwet’en clans have refused to give their consent to the project.
After a decade of fierce resistance, Coastal GasLink is getting closer to drilling under the Wedzin Kwa, the sacred headwaters of the Wet'suwet'en since time immemorial. Now is the time to come together and demand drilling stop.
Join us for “Sound the Alarm for Wet’suwet’en” a live zoom event on Thursday, May 26, 4pm PT / 7pm ET.
Led by Sleydo’ Molly Wickham of Gidimt’en Checkpoint, together we’ll take action!
