Dr. Noah Oiknine, MD

Class of 2016

This month, we’re proud to feature Noah Oiknine, Hebrew Academy Class of 2016, whose #HAexperience continues to inspire. After earning a DEC in Health Science at Dawson College, Noah pursued his passion for medicine at McGill University, graduating with his MD in 2023. He is now advancing his expertise through an MSc in Experimental Medicine at Université de Montréal, focusing on improving upper extremity function for spinal cord injury patients through nerve transfer surgery research.

Noah’s journey doesn’t stop there — he currently training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery until 2029. His dedication to healing and helping others reflects the values instilled at Hebrew Academy, serving as a testament to the impact of an #HAexperience.

If you could thank Hebrew Academy for one thing that shaped who you are today, what would it be?

There are many things I’ve taken away from Hebrew Academy and am grateful for, but the most important one is the strong Jewish values we were taught every day. These values have stayed with me and will continue to guide me throughout my adult life until I eventually pass them on to my own future family.

How did Hebrew Academy prepare you to navigate both your professional journey and your Jewish identity in the world?

Hebrew Academy provided many concrete examples of how it’s possible to be a successful professional without compromising your Jewish identity. In fact, you’d be surprised to see how many visibly Jewish professionals are HA alumni—and that’s no coincidence. It’s a testament to the school’s ability to show us that professional success and Jewish identity are not separate but interconnected. Embracing your Jewish identity and upholding its values will only contribute to your success.

What’s a proud moment in your career or life that you believe current Hebrew Academy students would find inspiring?

While I could share a personal achievement, I think what students would find most inspiring is knowing that no matter what career path they choose, there will always be a Hebrew Academy alumnus nearby to help guide them toward their goals. On most days in the hospital, I’m fortunate to cross paths with other medical professionals who are also HA alumni—whether they are medical students, residents, staff physicians, or even colleagues in my own plastic surgery training program.

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your journey, and how did you overcome them?

During my final year of medical school, applying for a residency in plastic surgery – a highly competitive field – I wasn't accepted on my first attempt. This was initially very difficult, but with the strong support of friends, family, and mentors, I persevered because I couldn't imagine doing anything else. I chose to see this setback as a chance to grow, and I realized that when one door closes, many more can open. That's exactly what happened. I was fortunate to spend a research year working towards a Master's in Experimental Medicine with two incredible plastic surgeons. Our innovative project focused on nerve transfers to improve upper extremity function in spinal cord injury patients. These surgeons are now close mentors, my program director, and division chief. Had I been accepted into plastic surgery right away, I wouldn't have had these amazing opportunities, connections, and the resulting growth. My key message is to follow your dreams, know that continued perseverance pays off, and when one door seems closed, keep searching and working hard – you'll find that many other doors and opportunities will lead you to your goals.
