Spotlight on Project SAGE

E is for Educate

SAGE is an acronym standing for Support-Advocate-Guide-Educate. This article is the fourth in a four-part series highlighting each letter in the Project SAGE acronym and sharing how we as an organization fulfill our mission of creating social change to end interpersonal relationship violence.

We at Project SAGE support clients as they navigate challenging personal circumstances. Through our educational programming, and especially our primary prevention programming for middle- and high-school students, we hope to help youth learn to deal with the complexities of interpersonal relationships in safer and healthier ways. Sarah is our Primary Prevention Educator. She teaches healthy relationship skills in Grades 6 through 12 in all Region 1 schools and select area private schools.

Throughout the school year, Sarah works closely with school guidance counselors, social workers, and administrators to implement each grade-level curriculum. Much of Sarah's teaching involves facilitating critical thinking and in-depth conversations around consent, boundaries, equality, and respect. Building skills around managing challenging teen experiences, such as dating and peer pressure, is another critical aspect of Sarah's work with students. While the students are on vacation during the summer, Sarah is busy reviewing feedback gathered throughout the school year from students, school personnel, and the wider community. This feedback is used to revise lesson plans, making them clearer and more effective. Reflecting on the importance of this work, Sarah says, "I never heard the word 'consent' mentioned once when I was in high school. I know now how important that conversation is. Every lesson that I teach is a lesson I wish I had had when I was a student."
