Greetings!

We are deeply grateful for the time you spent at Holden Village this past summer!

This week, the hush of autumn settles over the Village. Green leaves fade to gold and the first sparkle of frost appears on the distant peaks. As the summer whirlwind settles into something softer, we think back over this past season and all this community has accomplished.

We grew and changed. Villagers were challenged, inspired, and encouraged by teaching faculty sessions. From theology to ecology to abstract art, we learned and broadened our viewpoints thanks to the generosity of folks sharing their knowledge and their gifts.

We practiced community by prioritizing wellness. We evolved and listened to the shifting COVID guidelines and protocols, adapting patterns to create welcome and hospitality in an unusual new context.

We tended to our places and sacred spaces. Volunteers stewarded buildings and the surrounding wilderness, and we cared for one another in daily service and worship. We rebuilt porches, cleaned bedrooms, cleared trails, and celebrated life together with our fellow travelers.

We extended welcome beyond this valley. Through outreach like Virtual Programming and the Jubilee Auction, we are creating access to Holden that goes beyond this physical space. Thank you for being a part of that.

Whether you are looking towards a guest visit to Holden, spending time volunteering, or staying engaged from afar, we welcome and invite you to be part of Holden’s community of practice - cultivating a more just, sustainable, and compassionate world.

Faithfully,
Stacy Kitahata, Mark Bach, and Kathie Bach

Holden Voices
Holden Teaching Faculty Tamisha Tyler, MDiv (she/her) is Executive Director of Arts, Religion and Culture (ARC) and a Ph.D. candidate studying Theology, Culture, and Ethics. In this conversation, Tamisha talks about finding the field of theopoetics, developing the Subversive Liturgy Project in front of the Pasadena Police Department, and her dissertation, which explores Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower as a work of theopoetics.

Tamisha describes theopoetics as "the intersections of spirituality and religious reflection centering the aesthetics and arts, embodiment, and relation to community."
Holden Village seeks candidates to serve as teaching faculty and guest musicians!

Summer 2022 marks our 60th anniversary of summer programming in the Village, in which we will explore the theme of Jubilee.

The program will include visual and performing arts, the sciences, theology, diversity, inclusion and racial justice, global and domestic topics, and more. Guest Musicians assist in leading worship and enlivening the community life through music. Our goal is to have a faculty established by mid-December.
